The Brown Eyed Girl Came for a Visit!

Yes, this is an old picture, because you know what...?

We forgot to take a new one!

Her visit the week before last was a bit overshadowed after the fact by having to put the dog to sleep the day after she left, but she came, we visited, we enjoyed each others' company, she went home. And she's doing so well. I couldn't be more pleased.

We worried she wouldn't make it as a huge snow system was working its way across Colorado early that week, but the severity lessened and the system shifted south just slightly and it all worked out.

She and I just hung out Thursday and Friday afternoon, chatting and watching movies. On Friday we went out for her birthday dinner and had presents. Her birthday isn't until the beginning of March, but she was here, so we celebrated.

Saturday and Sunday was just more hanging out and visiting, although she left Sunday, so that was a bit fraught since she got emails saying her flight was delayed even though the airport and airline website both said it was on time.

She arrived home safe and sound, and all is well.

Now, let's fill out the rest of this post with a...

Miscellaneous Monday

...round of random tidbits. (it is Monday after all.)

* * * * *

In other news, our Dallas Stars are Central Division / Western Conference leaders. By the skin of their teeth. At some point I could swear I reported that my boys in Victory Green hadn't lost more than two games in a row...

Well, they went and lost five in a row with a demoralizing loss to the worst team in the league last week who posted a come from behind victory after being three goals down... The Stars did win in overtime this past Saturday, though they had to go to overtime to do it, but two points are two points.

If it weren't for the loser point in many of their recent losses (getting a point if making it to overtime even if you lose) and an excellent run at the beginning of the season, we'd probably be on the outside of the playoffs looking in.

** sigh **

Update on Me...

A)

Finally got back to the ortho doc. It turns out I have bursitis and labral tears in/on both hips.  The doc gave me an easy at-home exercise to do, prescribed an additional round of drugs as well as actual physical therapy. Fun times, we'll see how that goes.

It turns out I also have a bit of scoliosis. X-rays taken at my first ortho visit show a slight curvature. It's minimal and the ortho doc didn't seem too worried.

But I'm worried about it, so I bought a back brace that should help, and, bonus, will help with posture. It's probably related somehow, so helping one one will help both.

I really don't want to head into my 60s, 70s, and 80s with more medical issues than necessary, so this is the year to start addressing whatever crops up in a timely fashion.

B)

I'm also, it turns out, ten pounds over my preferred weight. So, yesterday, I started on a keto-based detox regimen to a) kick start the weight-loss and b) purify my system a bit.

I went back to a book I'd read (only?!!) two years ago that posits that hormones and stress play a larger role in weight gain/loss in woman of my age. So the detox should also help with that which will help with my emotions which should help with a lot of other things.

It's been a growing season in many areas of my life for the past year or so. Just trying to course correct a bit and keep moving forward.

C)

I finally updated the goals list on the right side-bar column to 2023's version!

* * * * *

I've solidified the plan for DD's and my mini-road trip and booked the hotel. Our funding is still a little short at the moment, but we have two weeks from yesterday...

* * * * *

Our vet's office, to which we've been going for all the years we've lived in this house has been undergoing some decor updates. New foyer paint job and furniture. The back area where the exam rooms are was being painted when I was last in there. I imagine the exam rooms, too, will all undergo a face lift.

I'm glad they're doing well enough to do that.

Not that you care at all about my vet's office. :0)

Have a great week. See you Thursday.

Happy Birthday, Mom!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM!!

Hope you have a super day tomorrow.

Unfortunately this is the only "recent" picture I have of my mom and me--and it's a good five years old now. We've lived so far apart for so long and traveling to her neck of the woods isn't a day's drive. And airfare is usually beyond the limits of my pocketbook.

But I suppose I should try to make something happen....neither of us are getting any younger.

Happy (early) Birthday DD!

Happy Birthday to my Darling Daughter and Hockey Partner in Crime...

Tomorrow we will be cheering our boys in Victory Green to victory--hopefully. Then Friday will be birthday dinner night. We've been enjoying pup-cakes all week at her request...

Have a great rest of your week.

I can sleep when I'm dead...

Sonshine's here! Sonshine's here!

I say I can sleep when I'm dead because I've been sneaking a little snooze when I get from the gym in the morning--now that I am going again--but Sonshine was awake this morning so we visited instead.

He's changed a lot and he hasn't changed at all.

Also today is his 23rd birthday... Happy birthday my beloved son!!

Also HOW THE HECK DID THAT HAPPEN???

Just yesterday -- I swear it was yesterday, he was born; he was a toddler, he started kindergarten. And now he's an adult with four years of military service under his belt.

Oh, man.

Have a great week.

Happy Birthday to ME!!

What would I like for my birthday...?

Well, a visit with my son would top the list, but that's not feasible at the moment.

To be a successful self-supporting author. I'll do what I can do...learn my craft, learn my business, and put decent books out into the world. The rest is up to fate.

And maybe a nice dinner out with DH and DD. I think that, at least, can be arranged. :0)

One thing I did get...the Pittsburgh Penguins winning back-to-back Stanley Cups. What a treat to watch and learn about about this team this past couple of months.

Have a great week!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOMMA

LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!

Monday, June 15, 2015

What a great week!!!

As I announced on Friday, it was my birthday, and I'd been having a good week until then. Well, the week just got better!

The JAG gals and I went out to eat on Friday as per ususal, and I was given birthday cards and presents! They even sang me happy birthday and paid for my dinner. I had such a wonderful time catching up, talking, laughing, and generally bonding with these women.

Friday I shared a group photo from five years ago when we visited the USS Lexington. Here's this year's group photo.

Saturday was another day of fun, just laughing and talking.

Then I found out my super celebrity crush Benedict Cumberbatch's baby was born--so do I share a birthday with the Cumberbaby??? How cool would that be?? (My wedding anniversary is the same day as BC's birthday!)

Sunday, I had lunch with my dear friend Nancy. Our visit was fantastic as usual. Our topics of conversation range far and wide and I love that so much. I also had birthday dinner with DH and DD along with DD's BFF. They ate, but I'd had enough food over the course of the weekend that I was too full to eat. So I just had dessert.

And that was my super fantastic birthday week. I'll be making pupcakes (pumpkin cupcakes) for next week's writers group. :)

Hope you had a great weekend too!

Happy Early Birthday to Me!!!

So Friday's my birthday, but through a quirk of circumstance, I ended up with my birthday gift a couple of days early!

I have a brand spanking new Lenovo tablet. I love my iPad, but the sweet thing is so old it won't upgrade to the latest operating system and therefore I can't download any new apps or update some of the others I have.

On this new tablet, I have access to all my various email accounts, all kinds of TV show watching apps, as well as my social media sites. Plus there's a camera and an FM radio! Too cool.

In addition to my new tablet, my new I-survived-running-my-chapter's-writing-contest reward also arrived. Last year, I bought myself this...which I still have and still use. But it's a little large. Though great for traveling as I discovered last fall while visiting Sonshine at boot camp.

My reward this year, in honor of a new fandom love, I got this...

Yep--a purse made out of a book. :) I'm so terribly excited. Sometimes a gal just needs to let her fan girl tendencies run amok.

That pattern there, on the second picture, it's the pattern of the wallpaper in the BBC's Sherlock 221B set!! How cool is that?? Can't wait to show it off.

Are you a fan person? There are all levels you know, from lurker to fan writer or fan artist to cos player or podcast producer.

Do you participate in any fandoms at any level of fannishness?? Do tell!

Every girl or woman deserves flowers at least once in their life, right?

And those flowers don't have to be from a man. Although that's always nice, isn't it?

My family lives far far away from me. Oregon, Nebraska, Michigan, Denmark. Most of them are women or girls--I have four nieces, all sisters and all born within five years of each other. (I think. No more than six, though.) And the oldest is entering her teenage years. I don't envy my sister. My own two daughters were enough.

The point of my post is that they're far away and I don't get to see them very often at all, so last year I started sending the nieces flowers on their birthdays. I wanted them to know I'm thinking of them and that they're special to me.

These are the flowers I sent them last year...

 Ariana, January 2013
(I guess this isn't really flowers, is it. Oops!)

 Lexi, July 2013

 Miranda, August 2013

 Kaitlyn, December 2013

I've been sending flowers to mom and grandmother for a few years now. Last year, I added my step-mom to the list, and this year, I'm going to add my sisters. I think I'm going to have to add a line item to my budget for sending flowers. Those flowers to Denmark--not cheap! And I've added a tab to my master spreadsheet of stuff with the pictures so I can keep track of which flower arrangement I've sent to which niece. I'm not so worried about the grown women, but I don't want to duplicate the girls' flowers.

When was the last time you received flowers?

Remembering my Dad--

Today's his birthday, or would be if he were still alive. Sadly, he died Thanksgiving week of 2009.

This is my dad in the mid-to-late 70s.

But on my birthday, a scant five days ago, I was listening to music as I usually do all day at work. Except I've been listening to the music I don't listen to very often. My dad loved music and even played the guitar. He exposed me to music that I might not have otherwise listened to and loved.

One of those acts was Bud & Travis, specifically their act The Cellar Door. It's a combination stand-up comedy routine interspersed with them singing folk songs. They began recording together in 1958, obviously before I was born. :) Anyway, Dad had the real vinyl album, which I listened to and enjoyed greatly. Of course, vinyl has gone the way of the Instamatic and I searched for years to find their albums on CD. Eventually, I did and I bought two CDs of their concert at The Cellar door, one for me and one for Dad. I gave it to him for Christmas in 2008 and, probably needless to say, he was thrilled. Totally blown away.

And my Sonshine even enjoys listening to these guys, believe it or not.

So to share that love with you and remember my dad, I share some Bud and Travis with you.

TGIF!

I have nothing exciting to talk about today, so I'm gonna just post pictures I've taken of random things over the last few weeks/months. Oh--wait my birthday was exciting and I do have some pictures of a few of my birthday prezzies.

First this awesome planter--don't you love it?? It's sitting right next to my front door so everyone can see and enjoy it right along with me.

My kids, the ones at home, bought me birthday cards! Wasn't that sweet?? The middle one with the chihuahua is from my mother-in-law and it plays music. :)

Also, Sonshine and DD made me PUPCAKES!!!!!!!!! My favorite cake flavor ever.

(Those're pumpkin cupcakes...)

Let's see...random things...

First a nest of lady bugs in my yard a few months ago. Actually, I can across several beds throughout the lawn. They're probably gone now.

Last weekend I was cleaning up the front yard, raking all the dead leaves out from under the dead hedges, and generally cleaning that area up in preparation for some live plants later...I came across this:

Yes, that's a G.I. Joe doll. He's covered in dirt and leaves and has a leg missing. Sonshine had several of them when he was younger and as he grew up, the way he played with them changed.

Here's a closeup of my Chinese Wisteria...it's growing like a weed and I'm having to wind its vines around the trellis. Can you see the one growing up the brick?

Well, that seems like enough for today. Hope you have a grand weekend!!!!

Happy Birthday to ME!!!

Today is the day! Forty-five years ago at 4:26PM, I was born in Southern California. Since then, I've lived in various places, including California, Oregon, Nebraska, Texas, Denmark and in Great Britain.

I received some lovely gifts including new clothes for the new, slimmer me, a mouse pad and wireless mouse for at home, new ear buds for my iPod, an iTunes gift card and...*scratches head* I think that's it.

So not much to say except I'm going to enjoy the day and I look forward to my favorite pumpkin pupcakes with cream cheese frosting.

Any other Geminis out there?

Some of my favorite things...

First let me say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my momma who may or may not see this. Today's her birthday, but she's on her annual birthday camping trip. I sent her a card and a gift in a timely fashion for a change too.

Speaking of birthdays, mine is in nine days--NINE!!! I love my birthday, I really do. I've already opened half my gifts though--which is amazing because we're usually so awful about waiting to the last minute to buy birthday presents. Except Sonshine's 'cause his birthday's in December and I usually buy his birthday presents in conjunction with Christmas presents.

But we're getting off topic...for lack of anything else exciting to post about, (and I'm sure you're all tired of the yard, my weight loss, my financial endeavors, and whatever else I've been yammering about of late) I thought I'd share some of my favorite things. Some you might know based on previous posts, some you might get a chuckle out of.

So let's start with the basics.

(there's no video, just the song)

Candy: Almond Joy or Almond Joy Pieces (when I eat candy)

Food: home made burgers, cooked on a charcoal grill

Baked goods: pumpkin pupcakes with cream cheese frosting

Happy Birthday, DD

Twenty-three years ago today I gave birth to my second daughter. A beautiful bald baby girl. She's not the sweet cuddly kind, but is, instead, prickly and grumpy and has an attitude, but she's got the most beautiful skin and a pretty smile, as well as the thickest, most gorgeous hair you can imagine. Aside from the attitude, she and I are a lot alike and are generally very compatible. She's my reader and my crafty girl.

Anyway, I've bought & wrapped presents and baked birthday cake. This evening, before we go out to eat at the restaurant of her choice, she'll open her presents. I can't imagine she won't like them as she made a list and didn't deviate much from it. I'm not sure where the singing Happy Birthday and eating cake is going to come in...I guess after dinner. Although, I'm all for eating dessert first.

Here are the pressies. There are a few for the Brown Eyed Girl (the pinkishly wrapped ones in the bottom right corner). Her birthday was the 2nd of March. I'd stashed them and couldn't find them and then came across them when stashing DD's gifties.

Care to share your birthday traditions?

Happy 17th Sonshine

For the last 17 years, part of our family countdown to Christmas includes celebrating Sonshine's birthday. It's not his fault he was born a week before Christmas, so we've always made a point of celebrating his day and not combining it with Christmas, as well as ensuring that birthday presents are birthday presents and not combo gifts.

Yeah, so his birthday isn't for another ten days, but because DD and I have been Christmas shopping, we've also been birthday shopping.

Normally, birthday shopping happens the day before or the day of someone's birthday. Not so for poor Sonshine who eyed a stack of birthday presents for the better part of a week. Very unusual circumstances and he was eager to see what sort of wonders were contained within the wrapped boxes.

He asked if he could open his presents early and neither DH nor I had and issue with it. We're saving the cake for the actual day, but now he has plenty of time to play the games (a Mario game for the Wii and a PC game) he can't play once he goes down to the fireworks store. DD made the wise decision to give him those things for his birthday rather than Christmas for just that reason. Now he has just that much more time to play.

Sonshine and some of his loot:

A book on the musical group, Green Day--one of his favorites.

A pair of comfies with Mario printed all over them.

His Mario game and Xbox Live points.

The rest of his cache included an add-on game for World of Warcraft, a pair of jeans, and a Minecraft tee shirt.

(And, yes, I adjusted the countdown numbers. Since as of today, and not counting today even though we still have to get through it, there are eighteen days left until Christmas day.)

Do you or a family member have to celebrate a December birthday?

Spring is springing...

The trees are beginning to bloom and my back yard is almost a foot tall again. Time to get the kiddos on yard duty. We're supposed to get rain today and tomorrow and I wish it would just fall already. We need it and it suits my mood (gloomy). Of course that means the grass will grow even more. :(

The writing is going well. I wrote 400+ words last night, which is double my M-F daily goal, so yay me. Of course, it's bare bones, mostly dialogue with a random thought here and an action tag there. But that's okay.

My online class is going well too. I need to do/post the assignment for this week. It's on my to do list for today.

Another hectic weekend coming up--Jazz on the Hill, dinner and silent auction on Friday and a stadium event to work on Saturday and then visitation with my daughter on Sunday. Her birthday is Friday and this will be the first one we've celebrated with her in three years.

Speaking of birthdays, I've decided and informed my family that my birthday will now be celebrated in conjunction with Mother's Day. We only have to eat out or cook special once, but I still get twice the presents. June is a crazy month in our house as the men prepare to leave for the fireworks store. And for the past three years they've also participated in a paintball event known as D-Day in Oklahoma and which generally takes place the same weekend as my birthday. So as of this year I'm not missing out anymore.

And a reminder for those participating in Black March--it starts Thursday.

And last but not least, my friend and critique partner, Clover's latest book is now available in paperback. It's called Highland Sorcery and is a lot of fun. If you like hot Scottish men with magical abilities, you're bound to enjoy it. It's available for the Kindle and the Nook as well, if you're so inclined, but I'll let you search that out yourself. :)

Happy Birthday--

Today would have been my daddy's 63rd birthday.

Sadly, he died last November.

Happy Birthday, Dad.

A Time for Birthdays

I just celebrated my birthday this past Saturday. It started off a little in question. Not a standard birthday, to be sure, but it turned out just fine.

First of all, hubby and son were out of town at a paintball event. So the house was quiet since Wednesday. We'll celebrate together this week--maybe another hamburger at the sports bar. It was pretty tasty.

Oldest daughter moved out on Wednesday evening as well. Not under the best circumstances, but not unexpected or even necessarily unwanted. I was more sad and relieved than upset.

Younger daughter gave me a $50 iTunes gift card, a bag of my favorite gummi bears, and Band Hero. We played Band Hero for awhile then went out for a nice juicy hamburger and took a stroll around Target where I bought myself a dvd set of one of my favorite TV shows.

Aside from that, I spent the weekend writing (@ 3000+ words since Wednesday!) and watching a few other miscellaneous TV shows. Overall, an enjoyable and productive weekend.

Another birthday...

...another year closer to freedom. Or so my husband said yesterday. Each year older our kids grow, that's just a year closer to them all going out into the world on their own.

Yesterday was our younger daughter's twentieth birthday. As I've mentioned previously, she's a pretty good kid. Going to school, working--oh, wait, her daycare closed and she's unemployed at the moment. But she'll be looking for a job soon. Luckily for her, she doesn't have any bills at this point. She has very little drama in her life, thank goodness. I have quite enough from the older daughter!

The celebration was low key as we were all suffering from lack of sleep the night before, so by nine we had all gone to our separate corners.

We've decided that all the kids will be out of the house by July 5, 2014. What's significant about that date? Well, my son will graduate high school that year and then the day after fireworks season, he'll be on a bus to boot camp! Okay maybe not. But we all need dreams, right?
