Labor Day Road Trip

As I usually do over Labor Day weekend, I went to visit my family. This year there was a new baby to meet and I was quite taken with my grand niece Christine.

Unlike years past where we've ventured out--we stayed in. I spent time bonding with the new baby and sharing my hockey passion with my family. Usually there's no hockey in late August/early September, but this year there was. So they fed me good food and kindly allowed me to take over the TV as soon as I walked in the door. :0)

She's a happy low-maintenance girl and I can't wait to see her next year.

Hope you had a lovely long weekend!

One last post about my trip...

After Seattle, DH and I traveled to Omaha to see another branch of my family...

Back in February, my babiest sister gave birth to my nephew six weeks before he should have arrived. Her amniotic fluid was so low, he was safer out in the world than inside his mommy's tummy. Anyway, all's well that ends well and baby Colton is doing just fine. But I wanted to see him before he was no longer a baby.

So here are my nephews and me...

Colton on the left and Austyn on the right.

He's a super happy baby!
(Being held by DH.)

In addition to seeing my nephews, I also went to see my dad's grave.

I'd bought a half dozen patriotic pinwheels here in Texas, but, alas, forgot to grab them on our way out of town so had to do with the paltry offering of the local big box store. But better than nothing!

It was great to see everyone, but I'm glad to me home again, home again, and back to my regularly scheduled routine, my own home (BED!), and of course, the dog. :)

What a great week!!!

As I announced on Friday, it was my birthday, and I'd been having a good week until then. Well, the week just got better!

The JAG gals and I went out to eat on Friday as per ususal, and I was given birthday cards and presents! They even sang me happy birthday and paid for my dinner. I had such a wonderful time catching up, talking, laughing, and generally bonding with these women.

Friday I shared a group photo from five years ago when we visited the USS Lexington. Here's this year's group photo.

Saturday was another day of fun, just laughing and talking.

Then I found out my super celebrity crush Benedict Cumberbatch's baby was born--so do I share a birthday with the Cumberbaby??? How cool would that be?? (My wedding anniversary is the same day as BC's birthday!)

Sunday, I had lunch with my dear friend Nancy. Our visit was fantastic as usual. Our topics of conversation range far and wide and I love that so much. I also had birthday dinner with DH and DD along with DD's BFF. They ate, but I'd had enough food over the course of the weekend that I was too full to eat. So I just had dessert.

And that was my super fantastic birthday week. I'll be making pupcakes (pumpkin cupcakes) for next week's writers group. :)

Hope you had a great weekend too!

Small Miracles

On February 18th, my newest nephew made his debut. Unfortunately, he did so six weeks before he should have. However, aside from some breathing issues, he's actually doing fine. He weighed in at just over four pounds.

With all the marvels of modern medicine, there are still a few things that can't be done--creating synthesized amniotic fluid apparently being one of those things. It was safer for Baby Colton outside the womb than it was inside as the amount of amniotic fluid had dropped to dangerous levels.

But, as I said, he's doing as well as he possibly could be, all things considered. He was taken off the breathing machine last night, and he gets to go home when he reaches five pounds.

If you're the praying sort, please pray for my sister, brother-in-law, nephew Austyn (Colton's big brother), and most especially Colton.

Moments of childhood....

Sonshine was on a mission the other day: to fashion a sling shot. He'd found a Y-shaped branch and he was off to the races. First he had to make holes in the arms of the Y in order to attach the elastic. That slowed him down since we didn't have any drill bits at home, so Wednesday he asked if I would find some at the office and take them home. Which I did.

Only to discover we didn't have the right type of something in the drill he was using to hold the drill bit securely. I'm not sure how he solved that problem, but at some point, he discovered another. His branch was mostly dead/dry rotted and it crumbled.

So he had to find a new one. Up the oak tree he went. After he'd found one that met his approval, he needed to fire-bake it. Or so he said. To make it stronger I think was his purpose. So he gathered up some large rocks, made a fire pit, and started a fire.

(Yes, we like fire at our house. So?)
(My only concern was him getting soot all over his band t-shirt, so I made him strip.)

Anyway, he finally finished his sling-shot:

I grinned and chuckled through the whole series of events because I love to see him in "little boy" mode. Not really little little boy mode per se, but not just sitting on his butt playing xBox. It was fun to watch him and be involved in the process, too.

My baby is growing up, but occasionally he returns to childhood, and I love it.

I really miss my kids being little. Life was easier and mush less complicated.

Obviously, we can't go back, but if you could, how far back would you like to go?

Oh, dear...not again...

When will the girls in my family learn?

I got a call from my youngest sister on Tuesday. Which is rare enough, but she's very random that way. As soon as I heard her voice, nervous, scared, worried (all shades of the same thing, I realize), I knew.

She's pregnant. About seven weeks. Due on--of all days--the (first) anniversary of our daddy's death.

Oh, boy.

So what the problem you might ask? My mom knows, but I'll share with the rest of you (two) readers...

I had my first baby three months short of my twentieth birthday. Not so bad, but I really shouldn't have been having a kid at that point. Not married, no job, living at home, going to community college. My daughter's father stepped up and we moved in together and he supported us. I didn't finish school. Anyway, not the point.

My oldest younger sister got pregnant in high school. Had her first daughter in January of her senior year. To her credit she did graduate. But she didn't learn what caused it and was the mother of four (all girls) by age twenty-three.

Now our youngest sister will be twenty in July. Not so bad, but let's see...baby of four kids (five if you count me as the much older half-sister), immature, living at home. Granted, she has a job and is attending school, but still...

Sigh...

I hope and pray the cycle breaks with my own daughters, as well as my sister's girls. My girls are 22- and 20-years-old. So far, so good. Every week, month, year is a milestone. I've told them both again, begged them both to take precautions. I don't want grand kids. The oldest doesn't seem interested in having kids, although my younger daughter does. She told me last night she wasn't having kids without a husband. I hope that holds true.

So back to this new baby...I don't want it to be a boy. For selfish reasons, really. Petty reasons. I don't want her naming the kid after Dad. But I don't want it to be a girl because...well, yeah...

Time for growing up...

What's a mom to do when she has to start buying her baby pants based on waist size and inseam length?

I didn't think I'd be quite so melancholy about my baby growing up, and by the time he gets through high school and onto college or the military, I may just be ready to let him go or kick him out.

But right now, it's hard some days to look at him and see the young man he's morphing into and not the sweet-cheeked toddler he once was. He hasn't cut the apron strings quite yet, for which I'm grateful. And my favorite words out of his mouth in just that sweet tone are, "Yes, momma." He's still willing to hug me in front of his friends, so we have a bit of time yet...

What makes you wistful to remember?
