As My World Turns...

Happy Friday!

Hope you're well.

The new car continues to surprise and delight. Not only does Google Maps show up on the HUD, but the car will read my texts to include emojis. I got a laugh out of that the other day. I can also pick podcasts from my HUD if decide, in transit, I want to listen to one.

I also discovered that my driver's seat can move in several additional ways. The front edge, over which our knees hang, can be levered up and down! The seat itself can be moved up and down as well as forward and back. The seat back can also be  angled forward and back. All electronically!! No pumping the lever.

It's not a great picture, but I was in a moving car. (DD was driving, not me.) But you know what it means, right? After all this time...?

Yes, after my sad post on Wednesday, the heavenly stars aligned on Thursday night and my boys won in regulation. That means they got the two winner points and the other team got no loser points. And on top of that, the two teams ahead of us in the standings lost last night, meaning we had a four point leap toward the team in that 4th place position we're trying to acquire...

Of course, we have to keep the winning going... :0)

In other news, I opted against moving forward with that online publisher I'd submitted my cookie book too. She wanted more and more revisions before coughing up a contract and I just don't have the time to devote to that process at the moment. There were a couple other reasons, but that's the big one.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Easter

Happy Good Friday and Happy Easter Friends!!

* * * * *

Hope you're all well. The new month has started, the new quarter has started, and the new week for me tracking various and sundry habits starts tomorrow.

March was rough for me. I've been in a funk for the better part of the first quarter and tomorrow seems like a good day to begin my climb out of it.

I've created my new habit chart. Stickers are at the ready. I'll be percolating the exercise plan of attack as well as the meal plan and menu items. I've ordered KETO test strips. They come with a guide book and an app, so we'll see how helpful that ends up being.

* * * * *

As I mentioned Wednesday, I'll be spending some time in that dang cookie book this weekend trying to figure out how to explain the revisions I plan to make--if I plan on moving forward with this online publisher.

An online friend was kind and generous enough to beta read the first three chapters and help me understand what the editor meant by a few of her comments. The whole process isn't working the way I expected, which has contributed to my frustrations and the desire to drop kick the whole process into outer space.

But...

The purpose of submitting & publishing with this publisher is still a valid one--to get my work in front of a new set of eyeballs.

The question is: am I willing to do the work necessary to make that happen or do I take my story back, hire an editor, contract out a cover, and publish it myself...

I'll let you know on Monday, once I figure it out. :0)

Have a great weekend!

Dilemma...

Remember the "cookie book"? I wrote a book for submission to an online publisher and submitted it back in January. I was told by the editor who received it that it could be 12 weeks before she got to it. That would have put us at the end of April.

The book is titled "To Linzer & to Cherish."

Instead, the editor got back with me within a couple of weeks, requesting/suggesting some changes to the submitted text (the first 1250 words of the book), which I made and resubmitted. She was satisfied with that change and wanted to see the whole thing after I read a book she recommended and applied the concepts as needed.

So...I reviewed and revised all 23K and sent it to her. Now that she's read the whole book, she's made another observation and requested an outline of how I'd make changes IF I were to proceed. If I tell her I want to make the changes and how I plan to do so, she'll request/send a contract...

Which sounds exciting, but I've spent way more time on this book this quarter than I anticipated and it's thrown me for a loop. I'm not working on the book I was supposed to be working on and I'm feeling a bit discombobulated in general. And this new directive which is somewhat time sensitive is yet another knot in the yarn of my life at the moment.

The offering of a contract sounds like I'll get in the Christmas anthology this year, which was the hope.

So what's the problem...? I'm not sure exactly. Part of it is that--I write the way I write and I have decent ranking numbers on Amazon. Readers don't care as much as editors do about a lot of things... And it's not like my writing won't be all the better for it, but just ugh...

Anyway...enough whining. :0) I told her I'd let her know by Monday, so my weekend will be busy...

Have a great week.

Squirrell!

My darling DD caught sight of these in Dollar Tree the other day and brought them home to me. They definitely brightened my day as well as my week, which didn't start off great. It's ending on a better note, thanks goodness, but I'm glad it's the weekend. (They're salt & pepper shakers, if you couldn't tell.)

I heard back from the online publisher to whom I submitted "the cookie book" I mentioned a few weeks ago. It wasn't a request for the full, so that really bummed me out. I'd had my own doubts about the opening chapter, which was all that I was allowed to submit for the query, but I wanted to get it off my plate and didn't listen to my gut. So while I'm not surprised or devastated at this point, it did sting a little on Monday.

The editor did invite me to revise and re-submit, giving me until the end of next week to get it back to her for possible inclusion in this year's anthology. So guess what I'll be working on this weekend and into next week? There's not a whole lot of work to do so I should be able to get the alterations done and a new query sent...

Anyway, hope you're well and have a great weekend.

The Countdown Begins...

Now that Thanksgiving is barely but officially behind us, it's time to think about and start planning for Christmas.

DD has already requested something non-traditional for Christmas dinner. Actually she claims that Christmas dinner has no requirements like Thanksgiving dinner does and has requested spaghetti. Spaghetti is not something I eat often anymore, so I don't think we're going that route, but chips and queso and deviled eggs are already on the short list of nibbles.

Sadly, Sonshine will not be flying home anytime soon, but the Brown Eyed Girl and her soulmate are planning a visit home.

* * * * *

So far, so good... I reached my word count goal of 1400+ words yesterday and today. Just Saturday and Sunday to go. I do think I'll end up exceeding the projected final word count. Not that it's a bad thing, more words just means completing this WIP might take a little longer, and I'm trying to get to some other projects sooner rather than later.

* * * * *

I hope you and yours had a lovely Thanksgiving. See you Monday.

Advent Calendars and Writing

I really love rubber ducks. Don't know why or how I came to it--probably a duck too cute to resist--and now I have a bit of a collection.

Perusing Facebook yesterday, I saw a rubber duck advent calendar!

Unfortunately, it's not the worth the $42, so I'll have to pass.

Then DD saw an ice hockey advent calendar...

Which has some cute stuff in it and is probably worth the money because creating one yourself would cost way more when you only need one of something rather than buying in bulk like the makers of this would do...

I did see some cool ideas for homemade advent calendars, so I might try to put a little something together for DD as one of her (early) presents.

Anyway, I hope your week is going well.

Mine is going well enough--I got edits back on the first half of the book. My editor had a lot to say and a lot of suggested tweaks and fixes. It's going to take a minute or two to go through and make decisions.

On top of that, I'm not quite finished with the book. I have 500 to 700 words needed to write a transition scene, but I have no idea what to do. I sent the second half of the book off the editor without that scene, because I need the rest done. I'll have to do my self edit on that bit.

As a result of me not finishing, I'm not going to make my pre-sale deadline, so I've got to go with plan B for the Facebook group takeover event I have on the calendar.

Lessons learned-- From now on, no scheduling a release until the book is done. And no scheduling events until I'm confident the book will be ready.

Catch you on Friday!

The Finish Line is in Sight

DD's pumpkin turned out rather well. Sadly the middle part so heavy, it began to droop and sag almost immediately. But she had fun doing it, and I had fun watching her.

I spent a lot of extra time on the book this weekend and I made a huge dent in the necessary tweaks. My editor has everything up until where I was stuck and she's almost done, so we should be able to trade halves this week. I'm hoping by Wednesday or Thursday at the latest to have my issues sorted.

My due date to upload to one specific retailer is November 8th--Sunday. I should be able to get the completed if not fully edited document uploaded. Then I can upload the final version a few days prior to the go-live date.

I'm cutting it close, I know, and I was this | | close to postponing the launch, but after the progress this weekend, I feel confident enough to stay the course.

And for the first time ever, I'm seriously considering a written plan for my writing / publishing goals for 2021 with milestones and due dates. Because I saved money not going to my conference in October, I'm "splurging" on a couple of book covers for the historicals I've had in my back pocket. One is complete, the other is almost done, so I'm hoping a deadline will get me across the finish line.

Anywho...have a great week.

I'm in business!

Well, I'm in several businesses of my own, but what I meant was...

I got my writing app back on my laptop!! I can write and/or edit again, although that's probably not happening until the weekend.

In other news, my ninth book is on pre-sale and will be released on May 1st...

I don't have much else besides work going on, so we won't belabor the post. :0)

Hope you're well.

(Self) Publishing a Book is both Exciting and Tedious

Happy Friday, y'all. I'm still waiting for the cool down to happen here in North Texas. C'mon, Mother Nature... lol

Come October 16, books 7 and 8 will be live and official. I got edits back from the proofreader over Labor Day and I quickly fixed all the minor issues. And I do mean minor. Missing words and whatnot. For all that I struggle with the plotting, I've never had a book come back from the editor needing major plot fixes. So something comes together somewhere for me, and I'm grateful, let me just put that out in the universe.

Once all the fixes are applied, it comes time to make sure the front and back matter is ready to go. That's things like the dedication, making sure the appropriate ISBN number is in place on the correct copyright page (I have three I can interchange as needed), making sure I've noted all trademarked items I mentioned.

After that it's time to compile the document out of Scrivener and into a MS Word document and format. This is headers and page numbers, centering scene and chapter breaks, blah, blah, blah. I don't mind this part too much. I'm trying create checklists for everything so I don't forget stuff and so I do things the same way every time. That's a bit tedious.

But the most tedious part for me is logging into the various retailers and setting up the book for sale. Blech. But if I don't do that, the books stay hidden on my PC. Conversely, it's exciting to get the email saying the book has been accepted for sale. It's even more exciting when the royalties drop into the account each month.

This weekend will be all about finishing the second anthology. It's so so close. Just the very last scene to wrap up, but I struggle with endings and I don't want it to be cheesy as it's a Valentine's Day date.

So yeah.

Also, housecleaning. Laundry. Grocery shopping. Oh, and bathing the dog, poor thing. She's nasty.

Have a great weekend!!

Making Progress

Despite it being writers group Saturday (and being gone all day), the weekend was pretty productive, at least as far as my publishing hobby goes.

After conversation with my dear friend Clover, I finalized the two book blurbs I needed to get done and I made some inroads on plotting a couple of books. Not deep ones, in all honesty, but I'm satisfied. I'm not one to bang these things out. The ideas have to percolate a bit so I can make sure the plot progression works and makes sense.

~

I'm just under three months out from my conference and there's still a lot to do, but now that book blurbs are written, everything else can start happening. Finally. I need to compile all my lists into one comprehensive list and then start doing.

~

Once the conference is attended and past and I'm back home, it'll be time to get back to writing--hence the plotting I'm trying to get a head start on.

Because not only is the conference in October, but HOCKEY SEASON STARTS in October. In fact, it begins prior to the conference. The Dallas Stars home opener is October 3rd.

My goal is to put two books out next year: book seven of the Ten Rigs series that is half written and to participate the second edition of the anthology, the Valentine's edition.

To that end, one of the books I'm plotting is that second anthology so once I get back from conference I can dive right in.

~

Hope you had a wonderful and/or productive weekend...

Also Frustrated...

I've been working on formatting my books for print... Meaning applying styles and headers and page numbers and breaking my Word doc up into sections, etc., etc., etc...

I've been working on this task (not daily, but often) for over a month now. I started off with one issue and I finally got that figured out, but then I have a new issue. And it's frustrating and I really just want to get the thing done and the books printed.

*sigh*

Back to the drawing board today.

I may start from scratch. Ugh.

I don't want to have to pay someone, but at some point I'm going to run out of time to keep messing with it.

But that point is not now, so...

Hope you're having a great week.

Talk about being forced kicking and screaming into gear...

So...writers group was this past Saturday and it was fun as it always is. I caught up with three out of five posse members.

In light of needing to get all my ducks in a row for the conference in October--mainly getting physical books printed, I asked my friends what the first thing I needed to do is.

The answer: format the manuscript for print.

Okey dokey--Google is my friend. Found several tutorials and I was on my way. Once I got the gist of what was required, it was a snap. All things I'd done before for another project.

One of my friends also had a coupon code (allowing me to do them for free) for one of the print-on-demand (POD) vendors, good through June. So I have two weeks to get at least two books formatted and uploaded along with a full cover (front, back, and spine) images... Yikes. I'm hoping to get four done.

Along with the proofing job and the series guide I'm working on and all the other things going on at the end of the week, it looks like I'll be busy busy busy... Yikes again.

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

Productive Weekend...

It wasn't as exciting as I'd hoped--I'd planned to go to the Stars game with my daughter and her BFF, but I couldn't  find three or even two seats together on my last-minute-ticket app. I underestimated the popularity of Retro Night. We went to a local sports bar instead and enjoyed good food and hockey on the big screen. The STARS won and a good time was had by all.

In other news, I finally came up the new title for book 6. The original title promised things that didn't happen in the book, so after some various searches through Amazon with keywords specific to my book, I found a title that didn't appear a dozen times in Amazon and that fit the story-line of the book much better. I was also able to finalize the blurb.

So TWO things off the list.

I've contacted my cover artist to see how soon she could change the title for me...but I haven't heard back from her yet... But it's the weekend. So maybe she's traveling or celebrating something. Fingers crossed I hear from her soon. I need to get this book out. And having the cover allows a whole host of other things to get done. I wish I was better at graphics.

Now that I have a new title and the blurb, I've been able to move forward much on several other items on the TO DO list. Whew.

I also added a few more hockey patterns to my Etsy shop. My traffic is going up--no place else for it to though. No sales as of yet, but *fingers crossed*.

Anyway, I hope you a relaxing and/or productive weekend.

Feeling the Pressure

Self pressure is still pressure...

There's a lot on my plate at the moment, most of it isn't terribly time sensitive, although the sooner I do it, the better it will be, but I need to shake off that need to try get everything done right now.

As soon as I can is good enough.

Although A.S.A.P. always seems to come with a sense of urgency. But if we take the phrase at face value, it means exactly what it says. It doesn't mean you necessarily have to push off other things to get something done, just get to it as soon as you can. When there's an opening in your schedule. When time allows.

I mentioned my BIG FAT TO DO list a couple of weeks ago and those things are weighing heavily on me to get done, but in addition to sorting out tasks for books that are already written, I do need to actually write the next one. But, of course, I'm struggling with that as well.

Nothing to do but take a deep breath and pick one thing on the list and do it. Then pick another and do it. And then the next and the next until everything gets done. Of course, there are another handful of things that need to be added, but I suppose, eventually, I'll run out of things to add.

The good thing about the list is that it's there and I don't have to add worrying about forgetting something.

The weekend's here, which means I'll have some time to work on the list.

How about you?? Big plans for the weekend?

So, Jen, how are those books doing?

I've been a published author for all of a month and a half. But life has been a bit hectic since I pressed the "publish" button back in November and aside from just getting books 1 through 4 ready to go, I haven't spent much time or effort on much of anything besides prepping for the cruise (which I need to share some pictures from) and then prepping for Christmas.

There's still the New Years weekend to get through, helping DH down at the fireworks store, but besides grocery shopping for those couple of days, there's really no prepping to do, so I've been able to stop and breathe and start thinking about what's what as far as the writing/publishing business goes.

To the answer the question, though, in the grand scheme of things I don't really know. I got an email from PayPal notifying me that one of my retailers sent me $13.42 in royalties. YAY--my first author earnings. So begins the journey to repay the money I've spent on editing and book covers and other expenses over the past year and a half.

A quick peek at my Amazon/Kindle dashboard looks promising, but I'm not entirely sure how to process all those numbers. Also, it shows me sales from several foreign markets and the corresponding currencies, so I really don't know what a final royalty payment for that sales period will end up being. I won't get it until the end of January, so I have to be patient for a little bit longer.

Have a great New Year Weekend!

Please watch hockey on New Years Day and the day after--hockey will be going back to its roots with two outdoor games. Should be a lot of fun.

It's OFFICIAL! I'm now a published author.

So

It's been a long journey--not that it's over yet--and there were many times when I wasn't even sure I wanted to take it, but ultimately I did decide to pursue publication.

And here I am...well over a dozen years after taking up writing with book babies out in the world!

Book one in the Ten Rigs Texas series, For the Love of Scott, is out free at a handful of online retailers. Well, except Amazon, because they don't allow free and it takes time to get them to change the price to match other retailers. And also propagation takes time... Books two through four are available for pre-order.

This is book one, For the Love of Scott:

You can find it at...

Amazon

iTunes

Kobo

It's not at B&N/Nook just yet because of technical issues, but it will be soon.

Books two through four, coming soon!

Book Two Book Three Book Four

So, yeah--the journey's finally begun. Wheee!

Have a great week. :0)

I have a plan, I have my own plan, and I need to stick with it...

In the last month or so, between the conference in Denver, talking with writer friends, and listening to industry experts (Mark Coker!!), the pressure to deviate from my plan of publishing attack is there.

I'm not going to say it's heavy or hard, but it's there. These are all people who are more experienced than me and definitely more knowledgeable. But I based my plan on other conversations with other people who are also knowledgeable, as well as on my own wants, needs, and capabilities.

Considering that I'm preparing to launch my books any day now, it's really a little late to second-guess and/or change my plan. I'll do what I've been planning to do all along with one major change (that doesn't contradict anything I've already decided) and see how it all plays out.

If it doesn't work, I can change things, I can try various things. No one's life is in danger.

It's getting real now, though. ANY DAY NOW! It's exciting and scary and nerve-wracking.

There's still a lot to do, so I'd better get to it.

Happy Friday and have a great weekend.

I guess it's time to do this publishing thing...

Book six arrived back from the proofreaders this past Tuesday...it was with some trepidation that I checked email everyday looking for it. After all the struggles I had, I really doubted that I'd sent her something at least on par with the first five.

As luck would have it, Ms. Proofreader had lovely things to say about the book as well as my writing--things I find hard to believe. Not because I'm trying to be humble or modest at all, but because I have doubts every time I sit down to write a book, because pulling a plot together and weaving any and all threads is a challenge each and every time, because plotting in the first place is not intuitive to me.

I don't have beta readers or critique partners that I run chapter by for feedback. Yes, I have my group of peeps who I ask for brainstorming help or their opinions or for help when I'm stuck, but they don't read my work. My proofreader is also my first reader. Which means not only does she find all my errors--of which there were many this time around--but her initial impression of the book is, I don't know, "pure," maybe? I mean...she doesn't know me. She's not obligated to encourage me.  I pay her to be honest with me about my words, to tell me if there's a flaw in my plot.

So, no, she doesn't have to love my characters or their particular tale, nor does she have to enjoy the genre I'm writing in order to praise my ability to actually tell a story. The fact that she has means a lot.

Anyway...all that to say that pulling the trigger on publishing my books hinged on book six being done. Well it's done and back in my hot little hands. So I guess it's time to get my little ducklings in a row and get them ready to go out into the world.

Look out world, here they come...

Well, in November!

Have a great weekend! I'll be busy checking and double-checking books 1 through 3 in preparation for creating the ebook files. But it's a task I'm suddenly looking forward to a heck of a lot more.

Funny how small the world can be sometimes...

I've been struggling again with this whole publishing journey.

I know all the best practices from a money-making stand point. But what's best for me?

Sure, I'd love to have a steady income stream in order to pay off debt and fix up the house and leave something to my kids. Unfortunately, publishing on the type of schedule that maximizes my money-making potential is stressing me out. All my friends are very encouraging. "You can do it, Jen." "I have every confidence in you, Jen."

And it's not that I don't think I can--eventually. I just can't yet. I've still got some learning to do.

On one of the Facebook groups to which I belong, someone shared a blog post from an author who I created a series bible for last year. I enjoyed all her books tremendously. But, as it turns out, this poor woman suffers with depression and really struggled to meet the deadline of the publisher she signed a contract with.

She talked about pinpointing when the writing was fun for her, i.e. not a chore, when she was most productive. She talked about what it means to be a writer. What "THEY" say... and what the realities are.

The fact is, we're all different. We all have a personal ecosystem going inside of us which includes not only physical health, but mental health, among other things. Each writer gets to decide for him- or herself what their writing life looks like in order to balance that ecosystem and get out of writing what they want or need from it.

I love writing and I don't think I'll ever stop, even if it ends up just be fan fiction. But I also think I can make money with my writing. So I want to try, but I have to keep the process realistic for my abilities and needs at any given time. Do I think in the future I can write faster and get where I want to be in terms of output? Yes, I do. But just like getting the physical body in shape, getting your writing abilities in shape takes time and effort as well.

So, with yet another timely "tale from the trench," I'm gonna do need/what I want to do to have fun on this journey.

Things are happening...

Not necessarily the things that need to happen--LIKE BOOK FIVE REVISIONS--but other exciting things like...

I am learning how to create my own ebook files: PDFs, epub, and mobi files. Well, really, I know how to create them...it's more learning how to tweak all the settings and coming up with consistent formatting from book to book, so I don't have to reinvent the wheel every time I want to publish a book.

Now, PDFs are easy, so...pfft!

The other two formats I create using Scrivener, one of the writing applications I use. They're a little more time consuming what with all the tweaking, but only a couple of hours at most. As I get more proficient and get formatting templates and setting templates worked out, then it'll be a matter of minutes.

The other fun thing that happened was that I have beta readers--basically first readers who tell you if your book/plot/characters work. One of my dear friends has a vast vast online network of people and she sent out a bat signal on my behalf. Three people volunteered to read book one for me and so I sent it out to those three generous ladies yesterday afternoon.

It's a bit nerve-wracking, I must say. Despite the fact that I've written fan fiction for years and it's out there in the world, and I've rarely had negative feedback on it. Two other friends of mine have read book one and were very complimentary, as has my editor been on all the books she's read so far.

I'm creeping closer and closer to the big day. Things are falling into place slowly but surely. For the most part...

I have a self imposed deadline of the 25th to finish book five revisions. I don't think that's going to happen. I chose that day in order to give myself time to put the book away for a rest before I planned to re-read it for any last minute adjustments before sending it off to my editor. I do have the leeway to push the deadline out, so for now I'm giving myself another week. April 1st, my friends.

I really need to just set my behind in a chair and get after it...and I will.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. I sure did.

Talk to you soon!
