National Cereal Day

After National Sons Day, which I mentioned last week, National Cereal Day, might be my second favorite "national" day of something.

If you've been around these parts for a while, you probably know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE cereal. I've been a consumer of cereal since I was a little little girl. That's a long long time. :0)

Of course, I don't eat it as much these days as I used to since it's full of sugar--yes even the "healthy" ones are carb-based and carbs=sugar eventually.

We do keep a box of Cheerios in the cabinet at all times as DH likes to snack on them and occasionally he'll get on a breakfast kick, and Cheerios are the easy go-to. I, too, will occasionally break down and have a bowl as a treat. But Cheerios are not my "favorite" and so it's easy to resist the lure of cereal on a regular basis.

When I walk down the cereal aisle, I'm constantly flabbergasted by the sheer amount of cereal flavors / themes. And not in a good way. I have to think there are more than 100 varieties of cereal, most of it sugary unhealthy crap. And I say that as a huge fan of the sugary unhealthy crap. lol.

Most of my dismay comes from the question -- do we really need so many choices of anything--much less sugary unhealthy breakfast food? In every aisle, there's probably (at least) 50% more options than we really need of any given type of product.

But we're here to talk about breakfast cereal, and my faves all revolve around chocolate.

If I were going to spend a week eating nothing but cereal (a girl can dream, right?), these would be my choices:

  • Frosted Flakes, eaten with chocolate milk
  • Corn Pops, eaten with chocolate milk
  • Cocoa Krispies, eaten with regular milk
  • Frosted Mini Wheats, eaten with either kind of milk, but probably chocolate
  • Raisin Nut Bran, eaten with regular milk

What about you? Are you a fan of cereal? What are your favorites?

Is it really January?

It's unseasonably warm for this time of year here in North Texas. I personally don't mind the warmer temperatures, but warmer temps mean that whatever moisture we've accumulated is going to evaporate and we need it. Our lakes and ponds and rivers are still down by anywhere from 9" to 18". Not good folks. But I realize none or few of us are experiencing the weather we grew up with.

The weekend was almost perfect. I wrote and spent time outside doing yard work--if you consider burning off your fire pit yard work--and enjoyed breakfast with a dear friend. The third member of our intended trio had to bow out at the last minute with a sick hubby. While I understood completely, she was sorely missed and her absence was what made the weekend only almost perfect.

But CP and I hit a few major Fort Worth sights and landmarks as well as a couple of minor ones. Sandwiched in between, no pun intended, was breakfast at a local bagel place. I had a pretzel bagel and, oh my, was it delicious.

Starting this Friday, Fort Worth Friday will be resurrected and you'll have the first pictures of our breakfast adventure. My original intent with Fort Worth Friday had more of a historical leaning, but I've decided to just go with anything and everything that tickles my fancy about my home town.

As if that weren't enough, I watched a lot of TV this weekend, including Grey's Anatomy and Downton Abbey, and except the one episode of one show I really wanted to watch. Ah, well. Lunchtime viewing for today.

How was your weekend?

(And can you believe today's post is already up??)

It's a Misty Moisty Morning...

...when foggy is the weather. So foggy, in fact, the fog advisory lifted only a short time ago.

(Usually there are red tail lights on the right side of this highway heading toward Dallas.)

The fog, clouds, and mist suit my mood just fine. Too bad I can't crawl back in bed for a few hours. It's great sleeping weather.

In other news, DH and I sat the kids down last night and had a discussion about house rules. It was made perfectly clear to them all, in front of each other, what the rules are, what the consequences could be, and what's expected of them. It was a late night since the Brown Eyed Girl had work. She has additional rules to follow. Not from us, but due to her stint through prison. Parole and probation. As a condition of coming back home she has to abide by those rules as well. She was not very pleased, but we made it perfectly clear (to all of them) that if they don't like our rules, they are free to move out. DD and Sonshine are perfectly fine with the rules. But that Brown Eyed Girl just seems to chafe under them. And it's not like our house rules are really that difficult and harsh. Sheesh.

In other other encouraging news, I have dropped a few more pounds. I haven't talked about it since the beginning of the month. I'm still ingesting more carbs and sugar than I should, but miraculously, in the last week, the weight has trickled off. Now I've got to switch from carb-laden dinners to protein & veggie rich meals. That should help me get past the line I'm straddling. One scale says 141.8, one says 139.9. I'd rather be firmly planted in the 130s so on to the next step. My goal is somewhere between 116 and 120.

Sunday breakfast plans in Fort Worth with friends are finally finalized. I'm excited about hanging out with ladies and seeing more of my city. Fort Worth Fridays will be every other Friday, probably starting February 8th.

I'm glad it's the weekend. Big plans??

The countdown continues...

We're on the downhill slide to the big day and just about everything is ready. I'm waiting for one gift to arrive in the mail and one to arrive at a local store. If the mailed one doesn't arrive, not a big deal. The store one I'm not worried about. They guaranteed arrival by the 23rd. All presents in my possession are wrapped and under the tree. Woot!

Writing and revising has been a big bust this week. Too much going on to concentrate, I guess. I'm hoping once Wednesday comes, I'll feel motivated again. Of course, Wednesday means New Years is just around the corner and this year is going to be crazy, me thinks.

On Monday, I mentioned our competitor (who is no longer) and our advertisement. Well, on top of the half-page color ad on the back of the Thrifty Nickel, DH decided a billboard was in order. Only because the exit near our store was moved farther south, which is a good thing, but is no longer marked appropriately. And if they miss us, the next exit plays host to a handful of fireworks stands. He's afraid those stands would get our paper ad business. The billboard is in the perfect spot to say "EXIT NOW". So...crazy, best ever season. We need enough product and enough workers. Wish us luck.

On a less hectic note, tomorrow, I'm getting together with my critique partners to hang out and visit. We're going to bring goodies and an ornament for a little exchange and we're going to relax in the midst of last-minute holiday bustle. Fun, fun, fun.

Meanwhile, DD will be driving Sonshine southward to the store.

Today's countdown event involves food...Christmas morning breakfast. Since there's really no kitchen at the store, breakfast needs to be easy. The last few years we've just done cinnamon rolls and orange juice--DH's favorite--and it's worked out well. We've been cooking them two-at-a-time in the toaster oven, but I think this year we're going to pre-bake them at home and then just reheat in the microwave instead. :) Add frosting and TA-DA!

Today's Christmas song selections are from Glee. Let's go with Baby It's Cold Outside sung by Darren Criss and Chris Colfer for the first one. I just love their voices together.

And our second song is Last Christmas sung by Lea Michelle and Cory Monteith.

So...is Christmas breakfast a special occasion at your house?
