Surprise! My nest is no longer empty...

The Brown-Eyed Girl is coming for a visit and Darling Daughter is moving home to help out for a few months. I'm so excited to see both my girls--now if only Sonshine could make it home, but alas...

In other news--now that maybe the real baby birds have left the nest, Mama and Papa Cardinal have been flying and chirping all around my yard.

Mama cardinal at the birdbath.

Despite the warm temps it was a rather lovely day yesterday, so Rayna and I spent some time in the yard. Here she is stalking a squirrel...

...up on the power lines that run from one pole to another across the back end of our yard. Silly puppy!!

Hope you had a lovely weekend.

A completely empty nest...

It's finally official--or will be--

Tomorrow our last birdie leaves the nest.

DD, our middle child, has been home for the past few days to 'legit pack' (her words, not mine) to move in with a friend. She'd actually started packing at the beginning of the year, anticipating moving out around the time Seaman Recruit Sonshine graduated high school last June. Obviously, things didn't go quite as planned.

For the most part, DD's been staying with another friend for the last few weeks and it's been quiet around the house. Now, we'll have the use of her room.

Since the birdies have been gone, I've definitely noticed a reduction in trash and the necessity of running the dishwasher every single night. The grocery bill has dropped a little and I've lost a load of laundry without Sonshine here too. Now I'm just waiting for the utility bills to reflect the reduced electricity and water usage as well...

Have a great weekend! And seeing as how it's October 31st, have a Happy Halloween as well.

Spring cleaning

Spring/summer/fall cleaning will take on an added dimension. Sonshine will be graduating from high school and shipping off to Navy boot camp at some point. In addition, DD will also be moving out on her own.

So any major cleaning will most likely also involve sorting and then packing or giving away. Since I was too bushed to do yard work Sunday, I decided to clean my room. The office space, not the bedroom.

All our family movies were in my room on my bookshelves. Well, I don't watch hardly any of them. Sonshine has his favorites of course, as does DD, so I sorted through and reclaimed my shelves which have bowed with the weight of all those movies.

I went from this...

To this...
And these...
 These are what we're keeping.

These are for DD and the Brown Eyed Girl to sort through. Anything left goes on Ebay.

And this is Sonshine's box for when he gets to a permanent place of residence other than a ship.

I'm looking forward to cleaning up, cleaning out, and reclaiming my spaces for new purposes.

Reality is setting in...

Sonshine is at MEPS today.

MEPS is the acronym for Military Entrance Processing Command. He was loaded onto a bus last night with a handful of other students from his school and taken to a Dallas hotel (to stay overnight)(yikes). Today they'll undergo a physical exam along with some other assessments. In addition, I believe he'll be able to choose his field of training, which last I heard is going to be helicopter maintenance. Ultimately he wants to pilot a helicopter, but he has to have a college degree for that, so he's gonna become a mechanic/gunner and then take classes to earn his degree, then cross train into helicopter pilot training.

(Image from Wikipedia and used as per their common licensing whatevers.)

That's the plan. We'll see how it goes.

Meantime, it's all becoming so very real for me. He's gone to MEPS for crying out loud. Although, he'll probably be around for another month or two until slots open up in his field of training. But still.

Sonshine and his activities and his presence (meaning primarily the noise he makes on every level) has been the soundtrack of my life for the last four plus years. And soon that familiar, comfortable background noise will be gone. It's going to be strange and sad and disconcerting.

Last night, with him gone, was an appetizer to my life in a few months...it was really quite strange.

What's a momma to do?

Life as I know it...

...will be drastically changed within the next six months. By September 1st, I will officially be an empty nester. I'm not sure how I feel about that. It'll just be DH and me in the house. What a concept....

As mentioned, DD wants to move out. Badly. Despite the glitch with the houses, I'm pretty sure she and her roommates will have found something and be moved within the next few months.

Sonshine has settled (for the time being) on joining the Army. Yes, he's changed his mind several times in the past year on what he wants to do upon graduation, and, yes, he may yet change it again. But the tentative plan is for him to work one last fireworks season with his dad before signing on the dotted line. Please cross your fingers that he stays with this course of action.

And I should be able to work from home at least part of the time come May or June.

Despite those upcoming changes, I do still feel like a hamster on a wheel. Plugging along each day on these two projects I have going, although as of today, I am one step closer to finishing one of them--the ickier one. The goal is to be completely done by next Friday. Well, I guess I do see some light at the end of that tunnel. I just hadn't really thought about it and it seems like I've been working on so long already.

As for having my house to myself...since DD and roommates have no firm date I have nothing to focus on, and although high school graduation will take place on June 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th--I don't know which day they'll assign to Sonshine's HS at the moment--it's still just a bit far out for me, though it'll be here before I know it. I know that.

Oh, well...I'll just keep on keeping on and I'll keep y'all posted.

Taking a breath and catching up...and considering the very near future.

The bulk of the work for my writing group's new contest (more on that Wednesday) is done.

I spent the weekend worried that there was something I should have been doing. I kept pondering what that might have been. I kept up with questions and judges acknowledging receipt of panels, but other than that, there wasn't anything that needed my undivided constant attention. Whew.

Instead, I puttered around the house. Something I haven't done in ages and it felt good and nice and a tad bit indulgent. I still kept thinking that some task for the contest needed doing, but I couldn't think of what aside from what I was already doing (see above).

Of course, I did the usual must-accomplish weekend chores: grocery shopping and laundry.

I also cleaned out a closet. It's practically empty now. Some stuff went straight in the bin, some went into the donation pile, one box had an assortment of old VHS tapes. I'd been wondering what had happened to Gone With the Wind! There were some other movie treasures in there that I think I can make some money from at some point, but that's a post and project for another day.

The house still needs a good going over, though. Once I'm working part time from home, I plan on getting back to my old method of cleaning house (another blog post for later).

As for my future, a few weeks ago, I mentioned DD had talked about moving out by May when Sonshine graduates from high school. Then the plan sort of stalled for a few weeks. But it appears to be on again and the move-out date has been moved up to no later than mid-March. I mean, she packing her room up and making lists of must-have things for her new abode...

So soon I will have a bedroom to decide what to do with and then redecorate!

Here's what it sort of looks like now:

Yes, the ceiling and upper portion of the walls are that beige.
And then the lower part of the walls are pink...

...except the inside of the closet.
Which is still blue--from when Sonshine was little and used that room!

Sonshine has requested a guest room, though I'm not sure why since we rarely have guests that stay overnight. Well, except a random friend of his, but they usually end up crashing on the couch.

I guess it's time for a trip to Lowe's to look at their paint cards. I like the ones that show the rooms painted already rather than just the cards with variations on a shade.

Any suggestions for my new room?

The downhill slide

My youngest starts high school today. In fact, he'll be on his way to school shortly. His older sister will drop him off and pick him up.

And so begins a new phase in my life as a mother. The baby is almost grown up.

The oldest child has moved out. I'm not sure what her life is like, but as far as I know she's still working, thank goodness, and she has someplace to live. I see her every now and again when she swings by to pick up mail or another box of her stuff, but she doesn't reveal much. But she seems to be doing okay.

The middle child is still at home. Not attending college this semester, but she will be searching for a job soon. She babysat twice a week this summer--just enough to keep her in pocket change. Not that she has any expenses at this point. But it's time to take that next step--a decent paying job and a car of her own. I expect that sometime between now and the time her brother graduates, this daughter, too, will be out on her own. Well, I certainly hope so. :)

The next four years will alternately drag and fly by. I'm not sure how I feel about that, all of a sudden. I have been looking forward to the time when all the kids were gone and my house and my time were my own. But thinking of my son all grown up and away from me...hmm...not so excited at the moment.

Is that a mother/son thing? I never felt that way about my girls. Or is it less the gender and more that it's the baby? Hard to know. Although I imagine in four years I'll be ready for what comes next.
