Happy National Bobblehead Day!

Yes, I have a few more types of collectibles on my shelves than I did when I last referenced my collections back in 2018. Back then I said that I wasn't (HA!) collecting salt and pepper shakers. Fast forward four years and, well, I lied. I started collecting salt and pepper shakers... see most of them here...

But I digress. Today, we’re talking about bobbleheads because tomorrow is National Bobblehead Day.

For me, it all began on a random Tuesday (probably)(maybe) night in spring a few years ago. My Hockey Partner in Crime (aka DD) and I arrived early at a Dallas Stars game as we were wont to do in those days whenever possible. Especially on “giveaway nights” because dammit we’ve plunked down a lot of hard earned cash for the seats we have, and we want the freebies.

Now, as you can see from the picture above, I am the proud owner of five bobbleheads, four received from hockey events, one as a gift or a purchase.

There are two bobblehead giveaways this spring, and DD and I already have plans to be early enough to snag one of those puppies, er…bobbleheads.

That’s how it began for me, but how did it begin in general?

Their origins are in Asia and imported to England in the 1760s and were called "nodding-head figures" back then and were more for decorative purposes than for collectible & money-making purposes. Click here for the BobbleHeadHall.com history page.

It wasn't until the mid-20th century that they really started to become a mass cultural phenomenon. In the 1960s, the first collectible bobbleheads were made of baseball players. In 1964, The Beatles were then commemorated in bobble form. And that was all she wrote. Fast forward sixty-plus years and bobbleheads of just about anything you can imagine are out there. All you need to do is Google-search!

McDonald's even offered mini-Scooby-Doo bobblehead figures in their Happy Meals this past year. Had I known that, I would have eaten at McDonald's a little more often! (not that I need more stuff)

Have a great weekend. Talk to you soon...

A New Addition...

The latest addition to the collection! :0) Aren't they cute?? I'd seen them when I was out and about with DD a few weeks ago, but didn't buy them as I didn't want to or need to spend the money even they weren't terribly expensive.

But DD ended buying them for me as a belated Mother's Day Gift (she did take me to lunch already), so that was a pleasant surprise.

Yep, I missed two days last week, but life has been terribly boring. I've done little but work, read, and write.

So I hope you're well.

No guarantees of blog posts for the rest of this week. I've actually been considering dropping to once or twice a week anyway, so this may be a good time to transition. If I have something exciting to share, I'll let you know.

Have a great week.

My Latest Little Project Done...

Somewhere along the line, I started collecting salt and pepper shakers. Don't ask me me why. The first set was so cute, I couldn't help myself. The next one was easier, as was the next, until I found myself with six sets. Then I bought a set for DH and then a few weeks ago I got another set as a gift. They've been sitting in a nice display on my dining room table, but they often had to be moved in order to work on various and sundry craft projects. No, eating doesn't happen at the able often. :0)

So I went from this:

And this:

To this:

I'm tickled with the way it turned out.

In other news, SPRINKLES all around!! my Dallas Stars won their game last night, putting them ahead in the best of seven series, 3-1. They play again tonight and could eliminate their opponent and move on to the third round for the first time since 2008. It's not going to be easy by any stretch of the imagination, but they've come this far--farther than I honestly expected them to, so remember to send all the good vibes to Edmonton.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!

My hockey wall...

My office is an ode to my various interests and obsessions as well as to my odd sense of interior design.

Hard to see with the light glaring at the camera, but you can probably see the fairy lights. And on the right side of the left window is a Stars car window flag. :)

My Charles Wysocki collectors plates (one set of three, actually) that I've had for over 20 years. Just to the right of those is...

My BBC Sherlock wall. Note the sampler there on the left... That was a blog post subject many many moons ago.

My desk and the wall above, chock full of random goodies that make me smile or were gifts.

Now this is the piece de resistance... my shelves full of more randomness, suck as my rubber duckie collection, my dala horse collection, my Matchbox NASCAR collection, along with keepsakes from my trips to Nashville. Draped around the top is a Fourth of July garland, because I love that too.

I have a little section of wall between the window and the corner that has been designated the hockey wall--the back of the door and the wall space next to it is also hockey wall, now that I'm thinking about it...

(The back of the door is really a shrine to Tyler Seguin... Yup, I'm that kind of dork.)

But this particular space only had a Tyler Seguin pennant along with a couple of "posters" -- a.k.a. expired calendar images of Tyler and his teammate Jamie Benn.

Remember those little baby samplers I shared a couple of weeks ago? Well, one got framed and is now on the hockey wall. :0) Of course, Jamie Benn had to come down. He's not a favorite of mine so I passed him along to a friend.

And now the hockey wall looks like this:

And the sampler itself...

The wall still needs a little work, but I have a few plans.

Stay tuned...

New collection...?

No, not really.

During my whirlwind Christmas shopping trips this season, I saw two separate sets of salt and pepper shakers that tickled my fancy.

I bought the first one almost immediately because I couldn't stop thinking about them as I was walking through the store after I'd seen them.

I actually went back to the store (a different one from the first, however) to buy the second set because, well, why not? They were cute and aside from being salt and pepper shakers, are of things I actually do have a collection of.

So what are these shakers of which I speak?

I loved these little barn shakers from the moment I spied them.
They're complimentary to my Charles Wysocki collector plates. :0)

Dala Horse shakers! Are they not super cute??

I'm really not interested in starting a collection of shakers, but if see others that hit my buttons as much as these two sets do, I'll probably break down now that I've already gone there.

Anyone else collect shakers? Feel free to share any other collections you might have.

All's quiet on the work front..

No employees. No boss.

It's very peaceful right now, though I do have day job work to do. I better enjoy the lull while it lasts.

Tonight I cook spaghetti for fifty kids. Yes, I'm providing the meal for the band tomorrow. And it's an away game in Dallas. It's going to be a long, busy couple of days. Friday should be a down day and I might have to work a car wash on Saturday. But that's relatively easy. Sit, supervise the kids, and collect the donations.

Speaking of collecting...I collect things. I read once that three of something or similar somethings constitutes a collection, but I've never been able to verify that. Does that mean because I have three kids, I could call them a collection? :)

Today, I'm going to share two of my collections:

These are (obviously) thimbles. Technically, my grandmother collected them, but then she gave them to me. These are porcelain thimbles from the great porcelain houses all over Europe.

Now for something completely opposite...

These are Beanie Babies. I love birds and so I have the three song birds available in Beanie Baby form.

I have more collections to share, but what about you? What do you collect?

Collections

Do you collect anything?

I do. Several somethings, actually--aside from dust puppies.

Today, I'm going to share my Dala Horse collection. Dala Horses are also called Swedish wooden horses. Currently, I have ten horses, ranging in size from about an inch and a half to one that is probably a foot high. This is from the top of the ears, down to the 'hoof,' such as it is.

My collection began about thirty-five years ago when I was a six-year-old girl on a grand adventure to Denmark, visiting her grandparents. During one of my visits, I received two horses. They were well-loved and played with for several years.

My collection remained at two for about twenty years, when I acquired a third--the largest one.

Shortly after our family moved into (Air Force) base housing back in 1995, we needed furniture. It just so happened that a dear friend of my daddy's also lived in base housing and was selling some furniture in preparation for retiring from the AF and moving into a new home off base. So hubby and I headed over to Bobby's house, a few streets over from where we lived. Now Bobby and his wife were both career AF, and had no children. They had been stationed overseas several times, and had traveled Europe, and collected lots of cool things. Among their treasures was this foot-tall Dala horse. Now, I had never seen one that large so I oohed and aahed over it. Well, darn it if that man didn't just pick it up off the shelf and hand it to me. What a gesture of generosity! I treasure that particular horse to this day. (I imagine if he hadn't known me and been close with my dad, none of that would have happened...but it did, and it's a really cool story!)

As for the other seven horses, I bought those via the Internet over the last several years so that I really did have a collection. Here they all are...

What do you collect?
