221B Con is a GO...

  • Con registration bought & paid for...
  • Hotel reservation made...
  • Plane tickets bought...

Come April, I'll be winging my way to Atlanta--a city I've never been to. It's going to be a grand adventure.

I'm excited about going--passing up a chance to learn from one of the big names in writing conferences to do so.

But I'm nervous too. Walking into an event like this knowing no one is a bit daunting. On the other hand, there's obviously the reason we're all there--Sherlock Holmes.

Have you ever gone to a fan-type convention? If so, what for/what type?

The Abominable Bride - the BBC Sherlock special in the theater...

The much anticipated Sherlock special aired New Years Day in the late evening, was shown in theaters around the world on the 5th and 6th, and will be re-aired on PBS Sunday January 10th at 9pm locally. Check your PBS station for time if you're so inclined!

I watched it on New Year's Day, I saw it in the theater this past Tuesday, and I will be re-watching on Sunday. And chances are great that I'll be buying the digital copy through iTunes here in the very near future. Yes, I'm that fan. (Though not as *that fan* as some people I'm acquainted with online.)

The film was a one-off special taking Holmes and Watson back to their Victorian roots. Mostly. It wasn't supposed to have much to do with the contemporary plot lines of the series in general, but...it did. A bit.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie tremendously. While it had a lot of gothic-horror-type elements, it wasn't graphic and it was quite funny. The writers poked a lot of fun at their contemporary version and there was a reason for that.

There were two things I specifically didn't like, although one is attributed to the above-mentioned "reason" and I can accept that, though I don't like it any better. The second thing, while somewhat understandable, I just hate that the writers went there, and I think it was completely unnecessary. But I'm not Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt--two of the most prolific, popular, and successful writers for TV in Britain at the moment. So what do I know?

If you are a fan of the show and have seen the special--what did you think??

SHERLOCK is coming...

I love the BBC's Sherlock as most of you know. The show airs three movie-length episodes every two to three years. The next series won't be filmed until next spring and subsequently aired until 2017, but fans have been given a treat in the interim. The lead actors, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, shot to super stardom as a result of their roles in Sherlock and have become hot acting properties. Happily they were able to carve out some earlier this year to film a one-off episode that takes our Sherlock, normally set in contemporary London, back to his time roots--Victorian England.

Not only will it be airing on TV (PBS here in the States), but also in the theaters!

So Sonshine and I will be going to see it (since he'll be in town).

It's finished, it's finished!!

And I'm super excited!!!

My Sherlock sampler is finally finally done, and while there is one specific thing I'd do differently, overall, I'm terribly pleased with how it turned out.

Here is the whole thing:

All the text comes from the show and are either popular quotes or ones I find particularly amusing.

It took me three or four weeks to created the pattern itself. There was a lot of erasing as I moved things around for optimal placement or to move things one or two stitches to the right, the left, up or down or to fix a mistake. Then it took another two months or so to complete it, although I did not work on it on a daily basis. I already have a frame for it, although I do need to buy a mat for it. More pictures to come, once it's framed and on the wall.

Happy Early Birthday to Me!!!

So Friday's my birthday, but through a quirk of circumstance, I ended up with my birthday gift a couple of days early!

I have a brand spanking new Lenovo tablet. I love my iPad, but the sweet thing is so old it won't upgrade to the latest operating system and therefore I can't download any new apps or update some of the others I have.

On this new tablet, I have access to all my various email accounts, all kinds of TV show watching apps, as well as my social media sites. Plus there's a camera and an FM radio! Too cool.

In addition to my new tablet, my new I-survived-running-my-chapter's-writing-contest reward also arrived. Last year, I bought myself this...which I still have and still use. But it's a little large. Though great for traveling as I discovered last fall while visiting Sonshine at boot camp.

My reward this year, in honor of a new fandom love, I got this...

Yep--a purse made out of a book. :) I'm so terribly excited. Sometimes a gal just needs to let her fan girl tendencies run amok.

That pattern there, on the second picture, it's the pattern of the wallpaper in the BBC's Sherlock 221B set!! How cool is that?? Can't wait to show it off.

Are you a fan person? There are all levels you know, from lurker to fan writer or fan artist to cos player or podcast producer.

Do you participate in any fandoms at any level of fannishness?? Do tell!

Getting crafty...

First of all -- before we get to the crafts -- I need to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my MOM.

Hope you have a super day!!

My love of crafts came from my mom, so what better way to pay tribute than by talking about my crafts. I still haven't quite finished the last Christmas ornament I need to make. I'm so close to being done it really is ridiculous. I need to just get it finished and sent on its way....

I've been working on a secret fan craft project for the last couple of weeks as well. I can't share it yet since I'm making one for a friend as well as one for myself, and I don't want her surprise to be spoiled. I'm putting it in the mail here in the next few days, so once she receives it, we'll have the big reveal.

And the next big thing, which I'm super excited about is a cross stitch sampler...fan girl style! Remember last year I made this for my friend Michelle...

Well, I'm making myself a SHERLOCK sampler for myself to hang in my office with my autographed pictures of Sherlock and Mycroft...

I've seen a couple on Pinterest and I'm using those as a guide to design my own. It'll be awhile to get everything designed and laid out the way I want it and still more time to stitch it, but I'm looking forward to it.

Anyone else crafting??

Special Delivery from London via Germany

Look what I got!!!!!! Fan girl swoon moment, let me tell you--

Sherlock Holmes played by Benedict Cumberbatch.

Mycroft Holmes played by Mark Gatiss.

I have a dear friend named Janie Crouch--we're online writing buddies. But we're also Sherlock and Benedict Cumberbatch fan girls. We seem to be the only two in our shared circle of friends and I can't tell how fun it is to gush over the show, the characters, and fan fiction.

Recently, Janie moved to Germany as her husband got transferred there for his job... And since she was so close to London when the Sherlocked convention took place, she was lucky enough to be able to go.

She graciously sent me the autographed production stills of these two since she actually had her picture taken with them both. (I'm sooo jealous.)

They have been suitably framed and are hanging and spare nails in the dining corner of the kitchen for the time being...

(not the best image...at a bad angle {I'm short!}and with not so great lighting)

As a way of thanking Janie, I'm sharing the fact that Janie has a new book out--Untraceable from Harlequin. So if you read romantic suspense, take a chance and buy her book.

Music Monday

So there's this piece of classical music that brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. Part of that smile come from the fact that I recognize a piece of classical music by "sound" which is rare enough for me. But part of it is that I recognize it from a particularly amusing bit of television. The musical piece? The Thieving Magpie by Gioachino Rossini.

We're revisiting the BBC's Sherlock--the episode (The Reichenbach Fall) in which Jim Moriarty (the Professor from the original stories) breaks into the display of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London... The actor, Andrew Scott, wasn't instructed to dance while he was doing his bit, but he did and it's brilliant. So for your viewing and or listening pleasure...

If you just want to listen to the music, choose this video...

If you want to watch the scene of Sherlock in its entirety with music and dialogue and the awesome Andrew Scott, choose this video...

Music Monday

Today, in honor of the Sherlock convention that happened in London over the weekend and the Unlocked: The Unofficial Sherlock PJ Party that took place online, I'm sharing two things today...

First, the theme to the BBC's Sherlock...

Second, one of the few (the only?) pop culture songs to feature in any episode of the show: Oh, What a Night, by The Four Seasons.

Enjoy!

Not so Elementary, My Dear Watson...

As you know, I'm a huge fan of the BBC's show, Sherlock...

Being the fan girl that I can sometimes be, I thought it might be a good exercise to read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original works to 1) just have the originals under my belt, 2) use the opportunity to read some real books in regards to my goal, and 3) see how the show's creators, Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffatt, have used the originals for their show.

I found a free Kindle version as the original works are now out of copyright and began reading. Unfortunately, I picked one of the longer tales and struggled through about a third of it before giving up.

The I had the bright idea to search for an audio version of it, and I did subsequently find one through Audiovox. Sadly, the narrator, a man from South Carolina, couldn't keep his characters or his accents straight and gave up on that, thinking I needed an audio book read by someone British--even if he didn't do characters.

Audible had several versions and I finally purchased one and began listening...

Of course, I've now listened to what seem to be the two longest of ACD's Sherlock Holmes works and I've got to say this--boring...

Hopefully, the shorter stories will be a little more exciting.

Are you a fan of Sherlock Holmes? Have you read the original works? Are you a fan of any of the subsequent movies, films, or TV shows?

The Lie of Leinster Gardens

Watching TV can teach you things and take you places.

As I mentioned several posts ago, I finally discovered the BBC's Sherlock--a contemporary remake of Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective.

One of the location shoots took place at 23 & 24 Leinster Gardens, Bayswater, London and was referred to as the Lie of Leinster Gardens. I Google-searched this to see if was true and sure enough! (Click the address for a bit more detail.)

 (image from Wikipedia)

So basically it's a facade bridging two sections of five-story terraced housing, but there's no actual home behind the two addresses. The underground train system used random open spaces to keep the tunnels free from smoke and for the old steam engines to vent their steam...

Click here to see more images of the back side of the "house." There's also more info via this link.

I wonder if there are any such anomalys here in the States.

T.G.I.F. and some updates of minor things...

I'm pretty tuckered out and stressed and very glad it's Friday.

On the other hand, I'm the fill-in speaker for my writers group tomorrow...yikes. I'm going to talk about the most common issues I correct while proof reading/copy editing. A subject I know and that other writers should find informative. I hope.

In other news, the de-weeding of the back yard is coming along. Slowly, very slowly. The dandelions seems to mostly be gone, so that's good. And I've deduced there are at least two kinds. Well, I'm sure there multiple varieties, actually, but I think my yard contains two. Along with some other dandelion-like weeds.

But since those don't seem to be growing much anymore--I'm now concentrating on the weed that grows stickers. It looks very much like crab grass, but it, of course, sprouts those blasted stickers. Mostly I try to pull out the whole base of the plant, including the roots. But sometimes I just have to resort to plucking the sticker pods so they don't dry out, fall off and go to seed and infest my poor yard with even more of themselves...

And last for today is my new fan love----the BBC's SHERLOCK. The show is smart and funny and filled with subtext to the nth degree and features the delightful and delicious Benedict Cumberbatch!

(Sherlock promo image)

(Benedict Cumberbatch--isn't that a great name?)

Anyone else watching Sherlock? What do you think??
