Happy Fourth of July!

Three days hence, the nation will be collectively grilling tasty meats, drinking wonderful beverages, and watching fireworks. I hope you have a wonderful day whatever you have planned.

A couple of weeks ago, DD dragged me to a mall. In two different stores, there were these huge sections of Funko Pops.

I've said this before, usually about the massive number of varieties of cereal in the grocery store, but let me just say it again in general...there is way toooo much crap in the world.

Why...just why?

Don't get me wrong, I own my fair share of crap, including five Funko Pops, but whenever I go to a store (pick a store, any store), I'm flabbergasted anew.

Buc-ee's ~ Hillsboro, TX

Two Saturdays ago, DD and I finally checked out the brand new Buc-ee's in Hillsboro, Texas. It wasn't jam packed as I expected, which was a nice change of pace on a hot Saturday afternoon. I bought the requisite magnet, but I also filled a gap in my wardrobe; I now own a Buc-ee's tee shirt. :0)

Usually I just post some sort of Independence Day related pictures, wish you well, and go on my merry way.

Well, this year I decided to add a few fun facts to the mix. :0)

Did you know that...

...July 4th is one of the most patriotic days of the year, but it wasn’t until 1941 that Independence Day was declared a national paid holiday.

...The tablet held by Lady Liberty has July 4, 1776 engraved on it.

...Not one, but two signers of the Declaration of Independence died on the same exact date? Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826.

For the first time in years, I'm not spending the 4th of July selling fireworks...

Instead, I'm staying home, being around for Mom. Even though the reason isn't what I would have chosen, there are a few silver linings. Not spending two days on my feet for the better part of eighteen hours is one of them. Not driving home in the middle of the night after two eighteen-plus hour days and sleeping on a blow up air mattress is another. An extra day off from work is a third. :0) 

I will miss seeing the friends I've made though--shout-out here to Robin and Sarah who will never see this...

It's the end of an era and it's kinda sad. DH posits that fireworks will be banned in the state of Texas (maybe the nation) within a decade due to the constant / increasing drought conditions--at least in terms of being available for purchase by all and sundry to light themselves. I'm sure fireworks shows will live on.

Well...

That got kinda maudlin and that wasn't my intent.

I hope you've enjoyed your long weekend as I have enjoyed mine.

I love this time of year for many reasons. I like the warming weather. May is Mother's Day, June is my birthday, July is America's birthday.

And because of Memorial Day and Independence Day, the stores are filled with temptation in the form of all kinds of themed household goods. From kitchen ware to beach towels to fairy lights, yard signs, flags, bunting, and flowers. It's a patriot's dream.

Sadly, our flag is becoming offensive to many, though they have no qualms about accepting all that our flag stands for and offers. Our country is being denigrated and made a laughing stock from within and from the top rungs of leadership. It makes me really sad.

I'm waiting and hoping for the day to come soon when the real reason we have the Second Amendment comes into play and America's citizens say no more. It'll be a scary time, but our country needs us.

Now go out and celebrate what's left of our freedom before it's gone.

This is going to be a crazy week, what with Fourth of July on Friday, so I'm going take a vacation from blogging this week and I'll be back next Monday.

The title of this post is the instructions on many many fireworks. As you know, we sell fireworks. The reason we sell them is because we used to shoot them. The title also became a joke during the show. Not that you shouldn't get away after you light the fuse, however! Safety first, always.

No one else around here decorates for the 4th, but me. I'm the lone house with red, white, and blue paraphernalia draped all over. But that's okay!

Today, I'm preparing to head south to help DH man the store. I do miss the olden days when hubby just spent thousands of dollars on the fireworks and prepped everything in my living room, and then we went someplace and had us a three hour show, hanging out with friends and family, and actually celebrated the day. Oh, well... Maybe one day soon. For now, I leave you with these...

I really wish I didn't have to work today...I had the day off yesterday and now I'm looking at a holiday weekend. But the first of the month brings necessary tasks at work and I will attempt to get some of them done.

Yesterday, I met with two of my critique partners. They came to my house to get something accomplished, which they both claim to have done. Now me...it's my house and I work differently at home. I didn't get as much accomplished as I might have had my CPs not been around. But that's not to say I didn't get anything done. I got a little done.

Similar to my friend Regina, I work on a timed basis. Usually in 45 minute cycles. :) I write while (say) the washing machine runs. Then I get up switch out loads, use the restroom, refill my beverage if needed and get back to work. Or I sweep and dust or do dishes or clean the bathroom, etc. I could *so* be a stay-at-home mom/wife/housekeeper/writer if only I a) I didn't have to work and b) could come up with decent plots to keep me in story ideas.

Unfortunately I do have to work and I struggle with plotting.

I'm in the middle of revising a short story, working to get it long enough to be classified as a novelette, at least 7500 words. That won't be a problem. I'm at 6300 words and (only) through the second chapter out of five. I think I'll surpass my goal quite easily.

I'm alternating that with revising my young adult novel, of which the first chapter has been made available to my CPs. Unfortunately I'm not sure when I'll get any critiques back.

I'm incredibly lucky in that I am usually a fast worker (in my writing endeavors). My day job allows me a lot of free time to write or revise or critique. Unfortunately the members of my critique group are not similarly blessed and I usually have to wait for them to write something for me to read or to critique something for me. Someday I may be able to find someone who can keep up with me. :)

Anyway...I made no progress on my writing room yesterday. The day before however, though I really didn't feel like doing anything, I did accomplish most of what I planned to do. The door molding received its second coat and looks much less streaky. I think a third coat will take care of the rest. The seams around the wall have been DAPped and all looks quite tidy and lovely. I didn't make it to The Home Depot for outlets but seeing as how I don't do electricity they wouldn't be switched out till after the holiday anyway, and I did get part of a third coat on my brackets and peg rack. Oh, and Sonshine installed the door knob so I can keep the dogs out.

Next up will be the floor. I'll have to scrub it good and clean, down on my hands a knees. Scrape up all the paint I've dribbled and then I think the first coat will be a clear coat.

So now let me get on with my day.
