National Cereal Day

After National Sons Day, which I mentioned last week, National Cereal Day, might be my second favorite "national" day of something.

If you've been around these parts for a while, you probably know how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE cereal. I've been a consumer of cereal since I was a little little girl. That's a long long time. :0)

Of course, I don't eat it as much these days as I used to since it's full of sugar--yes even the "healthy" ones are carb-based and carbs=sugar eventually.

We do keep a box of Cheerios in the cabinet at all times as DH likes to snack on them and occasionally he'll get on a breakfast kick, and Cheerios are the easy go-to. I, too, will occasionally break down and have a bowl as a treat. But Cheerios are not my "favorite" and so it's easy to resist the lure of cereal on a regular basis.

When I walk down the cereal aisle, I'm constantly flabbergasted by the sheer amount of cereal flavors / themes. And not in a good way. I have to think there are more than 100 varieties of cereal, most of it sugary unhealthy crap. And I say that as a huge fan of the sugary unhealthy crap. lol.

Most of my dismay comes from the question -- do we really need so many choices of anything--much less sugary unhealthy breakfast food? In every aisle, there's probably (at least) 50% more options than we really need of any given type of product.

But we're here to talk about breakfast cereal, and my faves all revolve around chocolate.

If I were going to spend a week eating nothing but cereal (a girl can dream, right?), these would be my choices:

  • Frosted Flakes, eaten with chocolate milk
  • Corn Pops, eaten with chocolate milk
  • Cocoa Krispies, eaten with regular milk
  • Frosted Mini Wheats, eaten with either kind of milk, but probably chocolate
  • Raisin Nut Bran, eaten with regular milk

What about you? Are you a fan of cereal? What are your favorites?

Let's Talk Cereal!

If you've been a follower for long enough, you probably know that I LOVE cereal. I have since I was a kid. Cereal was a staple breakfast in our growing up and it was for my kids too. I don't eat it much these days because it's full of carbohydrates and sugars and I'm trying to head into my golden age a little healthier.

And I've lamented several times (or more often) how many UNNECESSARY cereal varieties there are in the grocery stores. At my local WalMart, cereal takes up the length of one full aisle on one side and about a third of the facing side.

Really??

Do we really need that many options??

What I did find a couple of weeks ago was this:

How excited do you think I was?? Yes, very!!

Unfortunately, the reality did not live up to the expectations. Maybe in a few years, when the science of things has progressed a little. But, then again, maybe it never will...

Now this cereal...

...which is not/was not available in my local area (because the player doesn't play for my hockey team) I would love to get my hands on. Not necessarily for the cereal itself, but for the novelty of it. I'd eat the cereal and save the box... Yes, I am a fan of Nathan MacKinnon's. He currently plays for the Colorado Avalanche.

In the mean time, I'll stick with good ol' Cheerios.

Have you a favorite? Please share in the comments.

Take care and have a great week.

DD Scored Some Toilet Paper Yesterday

It's funny the things that get a cheer these days.

I would have been happy with a 4-pack, but it's a 12-pack, so I can divvy it up between the house and the office. :0)

The food logging is helping. I've been resisting temptation, like Monday when I bought DH McDonald's. I really wanted a Dr. Pepper. I exerted my willpower and didn't get one however. Today, I finally brought a serving of the unsweet tea I bought at the grocery store. I could make unsweet tea, I know. It's not the same, though, so I splurged. I did have pizza for dinner last night, but stayed within my allotted calories even though I definitely didn't need the carbs.

I've discovered a new annoyance in all this COVID-19 business. The PSAs by folks who keep saying "stay inside." That's not the mandate, really. It's to stay home. You're allowed to go outside into your yard if you have one. You can go for a walk or bike ride. *sigh*

DD found a recipe on TikTok that's gonna challenge my willpower. It's called Chili Cheese Corn Dog Casserole. She's gonna make it for dinner tonight, so I guess I'd better be chincy with the calories today so I can afford to eat it. I'll update you on Friday on both the actual taste as well as my efforts not to gorge myself.

So...DD found this while at the store:

This amuses me no end, mostly because Peeps have been a running joke in my husband's family for years. One of my sisters-in-law had a thing for Peeps way back when and so we still buy some of the more crazy flavors we come across.

Anyway, I hope you're doing well, whether your life is relatively normal or turned on its ear. See you Friday.

Let's talk about food!

I had this conversation the other day and it seemed like a good blog topic, so here we are. :0)

My employee went to a small privately owned fast food restaurant in the business park that our office is located in. He came back and of course I asked what he got. He showed me his burger.

That's one of my favorite meals, I said.

A good juicy burger. I leave off the bun these days, but still enjoy onions, lettuce, pickles, ketchup or A-1 Sauce. Sometimes I eat them smothered in baked beans.

That led to this thought.... If I could eat anything I wanted for the rest of my life (and not count calories or get fat, of course), I'd live off of burgers, cereal, pizza, and pumpkin cake.

Who doesn't love a good juicy burger?? My sister-in-law made the best burger I've ever had.

In case you don't know me, I love cereal...all kinds, "healthy" and not-so-healthy. I don't buy anything but Cheerios these days and I buy them for DH and not for myself, although I confess I do eat them. More often than I should. But not with milk. This might sound "ewww" to some of you, but they taste really good with the caramel flavored protein shakes I buy.

And pizza...who doesn't love pizza?? Pepperoni, meat lovers, veggie, there are few traditional things I don't like on pizza. Not a big fan of anchovies or mushrooms, but I'm game for just about anything else.

Who doesn't love cake?? These are my favorite pumpkin cupcakes with cream cheese frosting. There's been a dearth of these in my life because carbs of course, but also, my oven doesn't work, so...

MY OWN PIC OF MY OWN PUPCAKES!!

What about you?? What few foods could you happily live off of for the rest of your life??

Hope your week is going well. :0)

What is cereal coming to?

Maybe it's been like this for a while and I didn't notice since I don't really eat cereal anymore. I buy Cheerios for DH and otherwise don't look closely at what else is on offer because why torture myself?

Maybe it's always been like this, but I didn't notice because I consumed it and was deep in cereal love.

So I was grocery shopping yesterday morning, as I am wont to do, and saw these:

Dippin Dots are an ice cream generally found at ball parks and fairs and such. Now it's a cereal, at least for a limited time.
Now the cookie cereal isn't much of a surprise, because there's been a cookie cereal for quite some time.
Now the Nilla Banana Pudding cereal really caught my attention because DH loves banana pudding. I was sorely tempted to buy it, but I didn't. He seemed interested in it when I showed him the picture, so I might surprise him with it next time I go shopping.

I do occasionally break down and have a bowl of Cheerios, because I deserve a treat sometimes or I just have no more willpower.

I mean I ate cereal everyday for breakfast pretty much my entire life. Once even, when my husband took the kids to visit his mom and I stayed behind, all I bought for me to eat while they were gone...three or for boxes of my favorite cereals.

My favorites include Frosted Mimi Wheats, Corn Pops, and Frosted Flakes. All are 1000% better with chocolate milk over white milk. That's my sweet tooth talking. :0)

No more cereal though as a general rule. It's not the greatest food for you, even the healthy stuff, for a variety of reasons, but it's full of BAD carbs/sugar and you know those are my mortal enemies.

Hope you had a cooler weekend than I did--111* on Saturday, blech, but we are down to 101* today, so WHEW.

Are you a fan of cereal? If so, what's your favorite?

Resistence is difficult, but not always futile...

I've come to discover the Fitbit has at least one snafu in it's something (I'm not sure what)--it won't always (hardly ever) register your elevated heart rate. Except it sorta does, sometimes? My higher heart rates from when I'm working out don't always register on the Fitbit's screen, but if I go into the dashboard and look at the data, sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not--weird.

In order to burn fat (my long-term energy storage/source) rather than my short term energy, I need to do two things: get into fat burn mode by getting my heart rate up to a certain level and do that when my body doesn't have easy access to short-term energy reserves--those that come from recently eaten foods.

Two weeks ago, I gave up tortillas and cold cereal yet again. I fell off the wagon once, but have been good ever since.

Last Friday, I was really craving cold cereal... But as I have seen progress in losing the weight I had regained, I held fast, as difficult as it was, and was able to successfully resist that delicious bowl of sweet crunchy goodness.

My willpower paid off and I have lost a few more ounces and am 17% of the way to my target weight.

I still have several adjustments to make to my diet, but all in good time and in moderation. I figure once I've been on the wagon for a while, I won't crave them so badly. That's my hope, anyway.

This is constant state of learning and adjusting--well, isn't everything in life??-- and eventually I'll find the right combination.

Have a great rest of the week!!
