Lake Conroe is As Beautiful As Ever!

The annual Lake Conroe Retreat is in the books. Yesterday was the last day/travel day, which is why I'm posting today instead of yesterday. We had a wonderful time as we usually do, and I got some issues sorted and made some progress on the book I've been struggling with for a couple of months. I should be **AM** good to go now. I should **WILL** be able to get this book done in time to publish it in time for my conference in October.

(I'm putting those positive vibes into the universe.) 😁

Here's to a great week of writing!! Catch you next week.

Rain Rain Go Away ~ Writers Retreat

This was the view from the dining room of the rental house we stayed in for the retreat. It rained Thursday afternoon and drizzled or rained most of Friday. We don't complain much about that in Texas in January because we always need rain in Texas no matter the time of year. But Saturday and Sunday were bright and sunny though chilly. But--January.

My goal for the weekend was to plot out the next anthology entry, write its synopsis, and come up with a title. While plotting is still a skill I feel insufficient at and need to work on, I still need to do it. So...I used one of my favorite tools after utilizing various other ones prior to the weekend and came away with decent story arc. I also wrote a new synopsis based on the plot points I came up with. As for the title...well, those are trickier. And sometimes (most times for me) the book needs to be written before the title becomes clear. And it's not written, so titling fell by the wayside.

In other news, I hadn't realized how anxious I was about my writers group meeting until I was staring down the barrel at it. As president, I run the meeting, so I was worried about the conversation in terms of what's going on with our parent organization getting heated and out of hand.

I mean--no one had sent angry emails asking us (the board on behalf of the chapter) to protest or make demands or anything of that nature, and I tried to send out periodic reports so they knew the board was aware and following the goings on. But you never know. The one person who I was unknowingly worried about the most didn't attend the meeting, so there was that whoosh of relief at not seeing her.

On the other hand, several other members expressed their appreciation for the board's lack of a knee-jerk reaction and that our first priority was our members and our group. So a very big WHEW for me.

Today I'm back to work and business as usual, both from a writing perspective--up early to exercise and write--and from a day job perspective.

Have a great week.

Monday, Monday...

And back from a three-day writers retreat, although I didn't go to far from home. Still, it was a chance to meet some new writers and to bank some words, which I did.

Thursday night we all set goals for the weekend, which officially ended at 11am Sunday morning.

My goal was 5000 words -- which I did not meet, but was calculated by doubling my daily word count for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Doubling my word count for three days put me at 3750 words, which I passed. Along with that, I wanted to write a synopsis, which I did. I also needed to break Snowball into chapters in preparation for sending to the editor this week. Which I also did.

All in all a very productive two-and-a-half/three days.

Despite the challenge of writing a synopsis--

Being an independent publisher I don't have to write them for myself, so I never have. However, synopses are being required to participate in the anthologies.

--I feel like having them has been an aid in actually writing the book itself.

Go figure.

A synopsis is basically a high level bullet point telling of the story. The publisher wants to ensure you can bring the story successfully to fruition/conclusion.

It seems to help me keep my eye on the end game.

I also spent a lot of time rethinking the story a bit and came up with a more feasible plot line for the word count I have to work with--which dropped from 15K to 12K since there are a few more authors participating. Yikes.

Anyway, hope you had a lovely weekend. Catch you Wednesday.

Mission Accomplished

Another lake retreat is in the books and was a great success for all six of us. My goal was to read through and edit the whole of "Snowball," which I did. The book's not ready to go to my editor just yet, but it's that much closer. There were a couple of scenes which needed big tweaks. Those got made. Most of the book just needed a more consistent arc of one of the protagonists' feeling about the plot I dropped him in. That hasn't been completely accomplished yet, but it's closer.

Of course, our friendships were cemented and we talked about how our lives have changed since last year's trip. Mostly all for the better.

From left to right: Gina, Regina, Susie, Clover, Chrissy, and me...

Now if you're wondering why I'm wearing boots on a boat ride, it's because the boat was actually our mode of transportation to a restaurant on one of the many marinas around the lake where we had lunch.

While I was down in this area of Texas, I also got to see my beautiful Brown Eyed Girl.

As you can imagine, none of us wanted to return to our real lives, but that's what makes this weekend so special.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. Catch you Wednesday.

PS--Sonshine's in town and I get to see him Wednesday or Thursday. Yippee!!!!

Excited to be writing...

As I mentioned at some point in the last couple of weeks, I switched projects from Book 7 of the first series called "A Certain Kind of Man" to Book 1 of the next series, called "A Snowball's Chance in Texas."

Last year at this time, I was hoping to have "Snowball" done by October for the conference I attend, so I had a cover made for it. For whatever reason, I didn't finish the book. Looking at what's written, I have no earthly idea why I couldn't finish it. But-- I'm gonna finish it this year and have a new book to take the conference.

Two, actually. :0)

Remember that 15K word thing I wrote back in March/April? Well, after 90 days of being a part of the anthology--more to come on that soon--it'll go on sale in October as a standalone. It's called "No Protocol for Love" and I've contracted a cover for it, which I should have by mid-July. I'm really excited about this book in and of itself as well as the opportunity to participate in a few more anthologies with these same authors. It's also a chance to expand my fan base a little. Maybe. I'm pretty sure I'm the only MM author in the collection, but I read across genres, so others do too. Now, whether they read my genre is anybody's guess, but we'll see.

I think I learned that I work better under someone else's deadlines. Despite all the excitement of post-season hockey, I still met the deadlines and got that bad boy written. So yeah. Gonna keep participating as long as they'll have me and I have ideas.

~

We're getting a lot of rain here in North Texas. I shouldn't complain because we always need the rain and other parts of the country have it worse in terms of way MOAR rain than they need or not enough rain, but yeesh.

~

Sonshine is coming home for a week's visit come Sunday. I'll be at the lake still and I'll miss a couple of days with him, but any time I get to see him is welcome. He'll get some one on one time with his dad though, so that's a good thing too.

~

All right, my friends... Friday will be busy as I'll be meeting my daughter and a friend, but I'll try to post something at some point. If I don't see you, have a great weekend.

Refreshed and Inspired and Raring to Go...

You might have noticed that I missed posting Friday's blog... I was at the lake having too much fun.

The view of Lake Conroe from the back deck.

I had planned to post, but time got away from me. :0)

Spending four days with my dearest friends in such a lovely setting is a treat like no other.

Everyone got something done.

My WIP grew by 2K words and I realized how many scenes were missing from it--meaning more words to come. That's a good thing because it was shorter than I like my books to be. The transition from a man/woman romance to a man/man romance is pretty well complete. There are just a few phrases here and there I need to masculine up a bit, but I think I have all the pronouns straightened out.

I figured out how to use the second book still and fleshed out a third character for a possible third book. That's always exciting for me. I'm not the writer who always has a plethora of idea bubbling in my head.

In between sprints and meals and fun, we bonded. Our friendship collectively as well as individually has grown over the years, and we learn so much from each other. That's the real gift of the weekend. These women and the blessing of knowing them.

I have also been inspired to keep on keeping on, to continue on my journeys--the writing/publishing journey as well as the weight loss journey. When people tell you they're inspired by you, there's a pressure to stay the course and not back track. For me it's not a bad pressure, but rather a good one. Even when I'm tempted to be done with whole thing--I've reached my original goal after all--they keep me going. I don't want to let them down.

Hope you had a lovely weekend as well.

Writers Retreat, Part II

Home again, home again, jiggedy jog, after a fabulous long writers retreat weekend with some of the most beautiful women on the planet.

 Clover, Jen, and Regina...

 ...Susie, Chrissy, and Michelle.

As I mentioned last week, we went to Lake Conroe. The house on the lake we stayed in belongs to the sister and brother-in-law of one of my writer peeps and they graciously allowed us to take up residence for a few days.

The weather was gorgeous, even when it rained. The food fantastic. The company unparalleled. Every single one of us got words on a page or some plot point figured out or both, but the real beauty of the weekend was the way the time together doing things other than writing bonded us all closer together.

 The lake from the house...

...and the house from the lake.

I've never had as close or as good of friends as this. I cannot imagine my life without any one of these special women.

While I was there, I also got to visit with the Brown-Eyed Girl as she lives just a ways down the road.

TGIF

Yep, I'm definitely looking forward to this weekend. Partly because it's been a hell of a week and partly because I get to spend AAAALLLL day tomorrow with some of my favorite people in the whole wide world--my critique group. Right, we rarely critique anymore, but it's more like our little writer sisterhood. We gather monthly to talk and talk and talk and talk. We support one another in all things; family and jobs and personal issues as well as writing. And they are all such wonderful, beautiful women. I don't know what my life would be without them.

Have a great weekend!!

Two and half days...

Until my writers group conference. A mini-vacation for me, really.

We'll be at one of the fabulous hotels in downtown Fort Worth and you all know how much I love being downtown. I've been thinking about getting Fort Worth Friday back on the schedule and this'll give me a chance to scope out some more locations.

Yeah, yeah, I'm supposed to be at a conference learning stuff. But in all reality I'm mostly there as a board member to help make sure things go smoothly. Once things get underway I can take to the streets! Not that I can go far...

I'm looking forward to spending quality time with several of my writer friends as well as meeting some new friends. I downloaded a book the other day and then discovered the author is attending the conference as well--how fun will that be!

Crazy weekend...

It's Friday, thank goodness. It's been a long two days. We've had a temporary technician in the office while our one employee and DH are both out of town. The guy is very nice, but he talks slow and he thinks I care about what he's doing. I know that's mean and snarky, but it's the truth. You're the IT guy, just do it and leave me out of it.

And he's sharing my space with me, which makes Jen an unhappy camper. I'm used to and enjoy my solitude. I listen to my music and once my work's done, I do what I want. Well, I don't really feel comfortable spending the day watching TV while he's here, so I've had to find other, less obvious ways of keeping busy.

And I got one--my first real proof reading gig!!! I'm so thrilled. It's for an author multi-published with Harlequin. Oh, my gosh--how exciting is that!!! I also waiting to hear back from another gal, but I don't know if I will. My theorys are, either she's just super busy or when I confirmed the cost, she flinched. That's okay. I'm pretty inexpensive as far as my research has shown, but it's still not cheap. We'll see I guess.

But the week's almost over. And this weekend is going to a non-stop whirlwind of events.

In addition to turning around a 324 page manuscript by Monday, the weekend will be filled up with a writing retreat at my dear friend Angi Morgan's house. Except I can't stay the whole weekend because it's also my annual JAG weekend and Sonshine's band banquet is Saturday night. It's also writers group weekend. I'm tired just thinking about all that driving! And we have construction everywhere right now. UGH!!!

Tonight, I head to Angi's house. Tomorrow, we car pool to our writers meeting and back to Angi's house. I have to leave there around five to get home in time to haul Sonshine to a birthday party he can only attend for 45 minutes, and then he and I will head over to the school for the banquet. (I might have skipped it, except the band director's retiring this year.) Then Sunday morning early, after I do my grocery shopping, I'll be heading eastward again to have breakfast with my JAG friends and spend the day seeing folks I haven't seen since last year at this time, and others I haven't seen in several years.

I hope you have an awesome spring weekend as well.

Catch you on Monday with all the details and pictures!

Almost back to normal...

The trip to OKC, while fabulous and productive, also threw my regular routine out of whack. But I think I'm just about back on track.

As a side note, Fort Worth Fridays are on hold until I can get the pictures I already took from my old hard drive and/or I can get downtown to take some more.

Back to OKC...

Saturday morning, after a lovely breakfast down in the hotel atrium, we hit it and hit it hard.

If you've never been to an Embassy Suites, most of them have a huge atrium with fountains or water of some sort, usually a restaurant and bar. But they also have a lovely breakfast. Not just some stale cereal and a few donuts, but a delicious spread from custom ordered omelets, to pancakes, French toast, bagels, oatmeal, and on and on. It's a great place to stay, just for the breakfast.

(From a cozy seating area looking toward the other end of the atrium where breakfast was served.)

We'd worked on Angi's stuff the night before, so it was someone elses turn. I think Jan went next, then Sarah, then me.

By the end of the day, we all had what we needed to go home and make some serious progress.

Sarah (writing as Lauren Holly) graciously typed notes for each one of us except herself.

Angi manned the story board as we hashed out turning points, emotional journeys, and scenes to support both.
Jan took notes when we worked on Sarah's book.

Below are shots of the storyboard after we'd plotted out my story. I took the pictures then transferred all the sticky notes into my spiral notebook for safekeeping. I can hardly wait to get started on revising Children With a Chance of Marriage after all the wonderful help I received. The story is going to be so much better now.

We left the room for dinner and then sat in the lobby chatting and sharing life stories after that. Then back up to the room for a bit more chatting, no work. We were all brain fried after all the intense work we'd done earlier. In bed shortly after midnight.

And that was day 2...more on Monday.

Have a great weekend!

Raring to go!

The getaway to Oklahoma City with three writer pals was a blast. Not only did we have fun getting to know one another, but we all left OKC prepared and ready to work. We spent several hours on the story of choice for each one of us. I'm so excited and anxious to dive into revisions for Children With a Chance of Marriage, book two of a pair. But . . . I have to finish revisions for book one first.

Speaking of Children With a Chance of Marriage, I sent in the revised entry last Tuesday and received an e-mail later that day that all finalist entries (four of them) had been sent off to the final round judges. Did I mention all three final round judges were editors at various e-publishers--one of whom is my target publisher??? Wish me luck. I'm very excited, but oh how I want book one done.

So some pics from the trip...

(The sky to the east as I left home Sunday morning to pick up my friend Angi Morgan.)

On Sunday evening, we headed to Bricktown--a revitalized section of downtown OKC--for dinner.

And we enjoyed yummy eats and a cool atmosphere at Toby Kieth's I Love This Bar & Grill!

(from l-r: me, Jan Schliesman, Angi Morgan, and Sarah Cannon.)

After dinner, we walked some of our dinner off along the little canal they built through the middle of Bricktown. I believe they call it that because they redid many of the streets with brick along with the fact that many many of the buildings are the old brick buildings, now restored.

(This is where we started, behind Toby Kieth's.)

(This is not where we ended, but just another view of the canal along the way.)

After dinner and the walk, we headed back to the hotel, got comfy and jumped right into helping Angi work on titles, characters, and plots for a three book proposal she needs to write for her agent to submit to Harlequin.

Stay tuned--more to come!

A-okay from OKC

Howdy all...made it to Oklahoma City without any problems. My friends and I have had a grand ol' time so far. Today will be plotting sessions and brainstorming for each of us.

So off we go...

Friday, August 3, 2012

Ugh...no Fort Worth Friday today.

I haven't been able to get my pictures from my old hard drive, so we're going to just skip this week altogether and see what happens next week.

Instead, let's just celebrate the fact that it's FRIDAY!!

I've got lots to do tomorrow in preparation of my trip and before I leave for Oklahoma City (Sunday at 8am.). My trip has been extended to two nights. YAY!! It'll be hours and hours of brainstorming and revising (maybe) and chatting and getting to know two new friends better. We'll do a bit of sight seeing while we're there, too, so pictures next week for sure.

So last night, I watched a movie in my writing room on the big screen for the first time. And no...I didn't choose Harry Potter, I watched another of my favorites: Penelope! It's a cute, fun, live-action fairy tale starring Christina Ricci and the yummy James McAvoy. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Remember I mentioned my Batman fan girl status a few posts ago? Yes? Well, I found the action figure I mentioned:

(He's about 4" tall. For $5, I couldn't resist.)

And that's about all I have for now.

I'll be posting Monday's entry from OKC!

Have a good weekend.
