Stocks and Bonds and Investing, Oh my...

Today, I'm at workshop to learn how to make money by investing in the Stock Market. Things like when to buy, when to sell, and hopefully how to choose which ones to watch and ultimately buy.

I've had an account with Robinhood--a commission-free brokerage platform for trading stocks, options, and crypto-currency--but haven't done anything with it because I didn't really know what to do or how to work the system.

Then they started sending out newsletters called Robinhood Snacks that talked about what stocks were up, what were down, and other interesting things about the stockmarket and my interest was piqued again.

Now, DH and I were supposed to attend this workshop last fall, but we had that family medical emergency and had to wait until this traveling workshop came back to DFW. Gotta say, it's not great timing now, but we've got $900 tied up in this venture and I want to make it work for me instead of letting it work for them, so it's going to be a long couple of days--all day today and probably all day tomorrow.

I'll tell you all about it next week.

In the mean time--have a great weekend.

The Night Shift

So I learned about this neat little setting on my iPhone. I've seen it pop up occasionally and didn't know what it was for and dismissed it, but I have learned what it does and it seems like a really good thing.

In the Display and Brightness setting on an iPhone, you can turn on the Night Shift and set it to come on and turn off at whatever time you want. I set mine to turn on early--6pm--because I read every night (yes, on my phone) before I go to bed.

But what does it do, Jen? Well, if you know, then skip this part, but if you don't, it does this: it swaps out the harsh blue lights emitted by the phone screen and offers up soft amber light instead. Blue light is apparently a "day-time" indicator to our brain and may hinder your ability to fall asleep and/or sleep well.

Honestly, I don't generally have trouble falling asleep. Or...maybe I do, but not for that reason. I don't think. When it's time for bed (8:30ish), I put the phone down and get comfy. With the help of an earbud and Benedict Cumberbatch reading in my ear, I'm asleep within five or ten minutes.

I originally started with listening to something to help me fall asleep because I suffered with tinnitus for awhile and it was very annoying. That went away, but often there's other noise in the house--we have no carpet to absorb it and it filters right down the hall and into my bedroom--so I try to block it out.

Anyway, I'm wondering how much better I'll sleep if I get rid of the blue lights before bed...

Tonight begins the new setting. I'll let you know if I notice a significant change.

It's amazing the things you learn...

Okay, so this isn't a deep and heavy thing. :)

For the last couple of years I've been invested in and reading heavily in a particular fandom. For the sake of this discussion, the fandom itself doesn't matter.

At some point, I came across a term I'd never heard before, but based on context knew exactly what it was. I looked it up just to be sure and went on my merry reading way.

And then a few Friday's ago as I was writing, I researched hats because I was looking for something specific and found it, but while I was doing so, I realized why I had never heard that original word word before.

Are you wondering about that word?? :0) It's "snapback." Also known as a trucker hat. Basically a type of ball cap that usually has mesh sides and whose size can be adjusted by two plastic straps that snap together at the back.

Snapback:

This hat website I was reading listed baseball caps and snapbacks separately because authentic baseball caps are made to size specifications and "typically worn by the MLB."  And that's when it hit me why I'd never heard snapback before--because I watched baseball growing up and in no other sport that I can think of or watch do they wear hats during play. Helmets yes (NHL, NFL, NASCAR), hats...no.

Ballcap:

It's not that I'd never seen a snapback before. My momma wore them all the time, other people I know wear them. I just didn't realize they had a special term all to themselves.

So yeah, I love that I can learn something new anytime, anywhere!!

How about you? What's the most unusual way you've learned something?
