Outlaw King


DD and I watched Outlaw King this weekend. From Wikipedia: Outlaw King is a 2018 historical action drama film about Robert the Bruce, the 14th-century Scottish king who launched a guerilla war against the larger English army.


I do like history and I like Scottish history, but I opted to watch it because Robert the Bruce is played by Chris Pine of the Star Trek reboot fame, which as you know, I love. The reboots, that is, more than Chris Pine, but here we are. Also I'm planning a series for Medieval Scotland at some point, so that was also motivation.

I enjoyed the movie, but I warn you it's not for the faint of heart, there's a lot of graphic violence. And for good reason. I mean--it's the Middle Ages and it's men fighting for what's theirs against huge odds.

 I give the film a movie rating of nine.

Movie Monday


So do documentaries count as movies?

Well, I think they should, so without further ado...


I recently watched The Captains, filmed and narrated by William Shatner. He interviewed all the actors, sort of including himself, who've played Star Trek captains--six in all:

William Shatner as the original James T. Kirk in the original series as well as most of the feature films
Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, captain of ST: The Next Generation
Avery Brooks as Benjamin Sisko, captain of ST: Deep Space Nine
Kate Mulgrew as Katherine Janeway, captain of ST: Voyager
Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, captain of ST: Enterprise
and
Chris Pine as James T. Kirk in the rebooted Star Trek film

It seemed a bit cheesy at first, but it was also interesting to get to know these actors on a more personal level. Unfortunately, not as much time was spent with Chris Pine as I would have liked... I'd started out rather ambivalent toward Chris, but after the interview, I developed a new appreciation for him as an actor. I'm still not overly fond of Kirk, no matter the actor, however.

My favorite captain has always been Benjamin Sisko from DS9, but after the interview, while impressed with his accomplishments, I was less than impressed with Avery Brooks the man. He just seemed airy fairy to me.

Kate Mulgrew, bless her heart, worked 12, 16, 20 hour days while raising two children on her own. Yikes!

Overall, I found it to be a worthy investment of my time.

Movie Monday


It finally arrived!! The sequel to my all time fave film, Star Trek 2009 (aka the Reboot) --

Star Trek Into Darkness



I'd been waiting FOUR years for this blasted film to come out, and I was seriously disappointed when I found out it wasn't coming out last year. :(

Kirk, Spock, and the gang fight off the bad guys, including the recycled (from the film) Khan (played by Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame) and Admiral Marcus. For plot info, click here. We also meet Carol Marcus, who in the original series apparently becomes the mother of Kirk's only known son. Aw, man, that's a spoiler for me. I wish I hadn't found that out.

See, I've never seen the original series, so while I'm familiar with the franchise, I'm ignorant of a lot of the original series back story. I have however seen all the other series except the animated version.

Anyway, while I really love love loved Kirk and Spock's character arcs in this movie (I got weepy in a couple of scenes), the movie itself fell a little flat for me. My expectations were really high and I left the theater feeling it just wasn't as EPIC or WOW for me as the first one. Don't get me wrong, I'll see it at least once more in the theater and I'll buy the DVD when it comes out, but it won't replace its predecessor in my heart.

I'm giving the move eight out of ten movie reels.
