Winners Get Sprinkles

Darryl "Razor" Reaugh -- color commentator for the Dallas Stars

I was originally thinking of some intellectual topic for today's blog post, but after Tuesday's game and then last night's game, I decided my Dallas Stars needed some love. Not only because they won both games, but because it's been a week of really good things, so let's celebrate!

1) Andrew Cogliano played in his 1000th game last night. There are "only" 82 games a year, so this can take a while. Sadly his Iron Man streak (meaning consecutive games played; he got all the way to 830) was broken a couple of years ago due to a suspect penalty call and subsequent suspension.

* On a related note, Cogs is the third Stars player this season to reach the 1000th game milestone.
* On another related note, all three of those players have been with the team for a year or less. Cogs came to us this time last year and the other two were signed over the summer.
* And for those two summer signings, Dallas is only the second team for each of them. They'd played their whole careers and most of those 1000 games with a single team (although not the same team).

2) Jason Robertson played his first NHL game last night and earned his first NHL point with a secondary assist on Tyler Seguin's drought-breaker...

3) Roman Polak played in his 800 game last night.

4) Tyler Seguin finally scored a goal, breaking his career long drought of 17 games. He did it in his home town of Toronto. In front of his parents and tossed the puck to his mom in the crowd.

5) Denis Gurianov, our young rookie sensation, scored his 17th goal last night and is tied for second on the team with another young stud, but only behind our captain who...

6) Captain Jamie Benn scored a hat trick during Tuesday's game, earning him that 16th, 17th, and 19th goal of the season, leaving him at 299 career goals...so #300 is on the horizon.

7) The Stars have the longest win streak in the Western Conference right now at 3. They are tied for second in the League with a New York team and trail behind the Tampa Bay Lightning who have won 9 straight games.

8) Now this point isn't just this week, but we have the best goalie tandem in the League with Ben Bishop and Anton Khudobin. We made it to the playoffs and to the second round of the playoffs last year because of these two. Three years ago, the team couldn't buy a win streak to save their lives.

Okay, I'm done gushing about my team. But they deserve it.

Have a love-filled Valentine's Day and a wonderful weekend. I'll gush abut tonight's event on Monday.

What haven't we talked about in a while...?

If you said hockey, you'd be correct. It's been a month, almost to the day. :0)

So let's see...

There has been some big news around the League specifically regarding the Dallas Stars...

Let's start with the bad. On Dec. 28, the Stars CEO went on a profanity laden tirade, calling out the  franchise's two highest paid players. Fans of the Stars as well as of hockey in general were divided on how they felt about it. Discipline in private, praise in public was a statement heard often on my various social media platforms. That his harangue was directed at two guys specifically was ridiculous. As frustrated as the organization is, top to bottom, with the lack of post-season appearances, so are fans.

But it's a team effort. Of course the two-highest paid / best players should be playing better, but they need guys around them who can play too and the team has been plagued by injuries and, if not for one of the best goal-tending duos in the League, the Stars wouldn't even be in the playoff hunt at all. Not only that, but the General Manager has had more misses than hits in gathering the right players around his faces-of-the-franchise. So most of us agree the scrutiny needs to be at all levels, not just ice level.

 Now onto the good stuff!

It was announced during the second intermission of this year's Winter Classic, that the 2020 Winter Classic--one of several outdoor games each season and played on New Years Day--is coming to Dallas. To be played in the Cotton Bowl specifically. Woo Hoo!! I AM SO THERE. Provided the tickets don't cost hundreds or more dollars each of course.

On Wednesday, members of this year's NHL All Star teams were announced and the Star's amazing, brilliant rookie, Miro Heiskanen was selected to go. Suffice it to say, he's been on fire since the beginning of the season and stepped up in a big way when our #1 defenseman was out for six weeks with a hand injury. This is a 19-year-old from Finland who took the lower level hockey world by storm for the last few years. Now he's making a name for himself at the highest levels.

Also on Wednesday, DD and I attended our first game of the year and the boys won!! And tonight, DH, DD, Sonshine and I are all going and it's going to be a blast. I love watching hockey with Sonshine. I love going to games with DD. And I love DH for getting me the tickets in the first place. :0)

So have a great weekend and let's meet back here on Monday.

So hockey's my new fangirl love...

Who knew listening to or watching a hockey game could be so stressful??

I mean, I know for the players it is, obviously, because they're trying to win the game and keep the opposing team from scoring. It is for the coaches when the team is taking a few on the chin...

But for a fan--or perhaps I should say a fan for any given team...it can be nerve-racking too.

So I'm fan-girling the Stars because they're my home team and because the two faces of the franchise, Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn, are some pretty nice faces (and bodies) indeed.

(Tyler Seguin on the left, Jamie Benn on the right.)
(We don't know nor care about the guy in the middle.)

I also follow the Pittsburgh Penguins because that's Sonshine's team, so, you know. And Sidney Crosby isn't hard on the eyes either.

So let's take the Stars. Now they've been having a rough season, no rhyme or reason to their wins or losses. They beat teams they shouldn't and lose to teams whose asses they should have kicked. So, yeah, it's hard to know while you're watching or listening which way it's going to go. I know they feel way worse about the losses than I do, but man, as a fan, you just can't predict when they're gonna start falling apart. So you sit clenched, waiting for it all to implode because usually it's just a matter of time...

Now let's talk about the Pens--the 2016 Stanley Cup winning Pens. Yeah, them.

When I watch or listen to a game, all is fine. I don't get stressed out or freaked out even if they give up a goal or two, because they've proven over and over this season (and previous one's I'm sure) that they can come back--and they do. Just the other night, they were down by 2 going into the second period. Then Washington scored making the deficit 3-0. And guess what happened? They answered back with five goals before the Capitols could score again. They won the game 34 seconds into overtime.

So yeah big difference in how I feel watching these teams. Go Stars! (They did pull out a win last night...)

Anyway, Happy Hump Day!

Gonna have to watch the replay...

From left to right: Jordie Benn, Jamie Benn, and Tyler Seguin...

Because I started watching the game and there was no score after the first period when I went to walk on the treadmill and the laptop died while I was doing dishes at the beginning of the second, and because it was late and the boys had lost the last several games I did watch, I thought, "whatever--I'll just listen to the end of the game on the radio." And DAMMIT! I missed all the excitement.

Congrats to the Dallas Stars who ended their losing streak. Also congrats to Tyler Segin who had a hand in at least four of those goals. :)

LET'S GO STARS!

The Premiere League has returned...

Despite the on-going Olympic games, I'm excited to see the return of the Premiere League--which is English football or as we call it here in the States: soccer.

Leicester City, the champions at 5000 to 1 odds last year, return under tremendous pressure to win. Unfortunately they lost their first game of the season as well as it apparently being the first one they've lost since February! Shame. You know they wanted to start the season with a win.

So, baseball's just over halfway done, NASCAR, too, the Premiere League has started. All that's left is the getting to hockey season.

The L.A. Dodgers will always be my go-to team, but I'm at a stage where I want to watch and I'll pick a team to cheer for on a game by game basis.

My chosen NASCAR driver, since Sterling Marlin retired from driving, is Martin Truex, Jr.

I'll follow Leicester City for the season and see how they do, although most of my British friends think they're a one shot wonder.

As for hockey, I'm going to jump on the Tyler Seguin/Jamie Benn/Dallas Stars bandwagon and see what happens.

Tyler is in the center, Jamie is on the right. I don't know the guy in the jersey.
