Miscellaneous Monday

It's finally official--I'm no longer treasurer for my writers group. I handed over the reins at the beginning of October and I haven't looked back. It's been nice. Now, I am still on the board as I'm the website person and the Classroom Coordinator. But the workload is less and different.

As for being a member of a writers group--I'm not writing. I've had no interest and no motivation to work on the revamp I've mentioned in previous posts. I've been meaning to contact my cover artist and rework our agreement a little bit to forgo the print cover options and just get all seven covers and the Amazon A+ graphic and move on.

Hip, hip, hooray--we have finally hired a new employee to replace the guy that quit back in the summer. New guy starts today. We really enjoyed the break in expenses, but DH (aka bossman) was being run ragged; plus he'll be selling fireworks come mid-December so we really needed another tech in the fold to compensate. This is the "slow" time of year, so it shouldn't be too much of a challenge for him to get ramped up. Not only that, but he's young--early thirties--so he should have the energy and none of the other challenges bossman is hampered with. Primarily that of being the owner and having to do owner tasks.

The weather has been gorgeous. Cool overnight and lovely during the day. Who'd have thunk a mere few years ago, much less a decade or two, that I would have embraced sleeping with the windows open with temps in the 50s? Certainly not moi. But as I'm now a woman of a certain age, the body is requiring less warmth, especially while sleeping.

Last but not least, I want to share The Asher House.

The Asher House is a 240-acre animal sanctuary in Oregon, run by a guy named Lee Asher. He LOVES dogs. You can tell so easily.

The Asher House mostly rescues dogs, usually from shelters where they're in danger of being euthanized or from bad home situations. But they will rescue any animal in need. There are horses, alpacas, llamas, cats, birds, goats, cows, and pigs. I'm sure there may be a few more species in the sanctuary, but those are the ones I've seen on videos.

Now, when I dream of winning billions of dollars via the lottery or some old relative coming out of the woodwork and leaving me a fortune, this type of place was the "dream." But watching this guy and these videos, you see just how much money and work and time and effort it requires.

And since he's got things sorted--if I do play the lottery and win, I think I'll just make a huge donation!

If you're interested in more information, here are the social media links:

And if you have some spare money, please consider helping Lee and his crew help these animals. There's a donate button right at the top of the website (the first link).

Hope you're well. Catch you in a couple of weeks. And...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

Captain's Log Supplemental

So last night I worked at Dallas Cowboys Stadium...December 2, right? Why was it still warm outside when we left last night at, oh, 11:30??? I'm not complaining. There's hardly enough room for the bodies in the stand, much less heavy winter coats, but it's December. It should be colder. Crazy.

Breakthrough! Last week, I shared that my friend (and last week's guest) Angi Morgan read my manuscript and made very helpful comments. I was able to get back into the game on this WIP. I'm glad to report that I have cut enough words to drop back under the required 10 to 15K word count for the line I'm targeting. But I still have some in dept revisions to make and the word count is going to push the 15K limit until I hit The End. But I think that's really going to challenge me to choose the right words and make every single one of those bad boys count.

The only constant is change...which I really don't like. Last week, one of our employees gave notice. In and of itself, that's not really a bad thing, but his departure comes at a really bad time. Not only will his last day be the first day of fireworks season (the 20th)--when DH and Sonshine are out of town, but our other employee is going on vacation (out of the country) on the 22nd. That means DH is our only employee for three weeks.

Now thankfully, it's over the holidays and we run rather slow this time of year, but DH can't be two places at once. So...I may be running the fireworks store with Sonshine for the first 10 days. I'm not as dismayed by possibility as I once might have been. Because what it means is a lot of writing time! And right now I want it and need it.

And still no word from the editors at Entangled. But any time now. *fingers crossed*

Check back in tomorrow for my next Christmas post!

Just me...

We let a couple of people go. I mean that technically we fired them. But that just has bad connotations to me. Although for the most part I dislike using euphemisms (most especially 'passed away' in place of 'died'), but I digress...

We just couldn't afford to pay them, so we...let them go. (My jury is still out on that. The wording, not the deed.)

Regardless, I now have to answer the phones. UGH! I hate answering the phones. I no longer have a gate keeper. I have become the gate keeper. nonononono...

I also have to clean the office, but I think I'm going to pay DD to do that. She could use the money.

Oh, and in honor of the month and the season, see new icon. I loves Christmas lights. Don't know why, but I do, and have inadvertently, now vertently (is that a word?), been collecting them.

And, no, vertant or advertant are not real words. Doncha just love the English language? :)

One of those days...

The day started off with potential, but that quickly went out the window when not one, but two clients called with serious issues. Issues that can be directly related to one certain employee. One we wanted to disemploy but now can't, at least not right away, because one other employee gave notice. Another employee texted in sick. How convenient that it's Friday. I hope he's looking for a job, 'cause I really have no use for this guy.

Hubby was going to try to go out on the boat today, but those plans have probably been derailed due to the above mentioned client issues. One client has now lost faith in said employee's competence and no longer wants him to service their company. Can't say as I blame her. However, this now means that hubby is the only one left to do so. Being a PC tech is not what he wants to do with his time.

As for me, cranky hubby means stressed Jen, so hopefully the issues can be resolved in a timely fashion and hubby can try to get that trip to the lake. Plus, we haz football game/marching band tonight. I have to be out of the office by 5ish (although I'd rather leave earlier if I can) in order to get home, eat dinner, get DD and band snacks and get to the school to help load and then get on the bus.

Tomorrow is a marching band competition almost 2 hours away. We have to be at the school by 8:30 am. I will get to sleep in since I'm usually up by 6:30, but since I probably won't get home and sleepy before 11 or 12 tonight, that 'sleeping in' isn't going to mean much. :)

And Sunday is a Cowboy event--the Dallas Cowboys play and the band is working a concession stand at the game. The band director has put out a call for workers, but I can't answer this one. I have been at/worked every band event so far. I'm talking football games, band competitions, AND Cowboy's events. Every single one. And after tonight's game and tomorrow's competition, I'm not going to be in any condition to be on my feet and working my ass off for nine hours. I feel a bit bad, but I just can't do it. A few other parents need to step up.

That is all.

Aw, the day sucks...

Day five out of my comfort zone. Mostly it's not so bad. It's really the dealing with the employees that I have to learn. The part I hate the most. The meeting with my employee went okay. He got a bit defensive and tried to pass the buck, and we'll have to work on that. I did, however, chicken out on discussing one thing in particular.

The day sucks because Dan has been trying to build a screaming computer on which to do forensics, and he's run into one problem after another and he's got a case he desperately needs to process. That and payday is next Friday and we have to make sure payroll is covered and we're running out of days. Collecting money is not my department, but I'm directly affected because I'm the one who goes without if necessary.

Comfort Zone, Day 2 & 3...

Day two went relatively well. At least on the surface. The day progressed and I slowly waded through paperwork and took in more information about the various projects going on around me.

I must say I'm pooped and I'm not even half-way through the week. I crashed early last night, too, but still feel a bit sluggish. Hopefully, a second cup of decaf Earl Gray will pep me up a bit.

Hopefully as the week progresses and I learn my duties, what works and what doesn't in handling the various personalities around here, things will fall into place and those who were not so happy with the shake-up will see that it's a good thing.

Day three begins now...

Work, work, and more work...

I participated in an interesting event this weekend: working.

Normally, my weekends are my own and I get to stay home and catch up on laundry, grocery shopping, and writing (such as it is).

But my hubby worked over-time on top of over-time last week to fix the complete cluster**** of a project our employees created the weekend before. I wanted to fire the lot of them, but that isn't necessarily in the best interest of our business at the moment, but it still isn't outside the realm of possibility...

So I offered to my services to my hubby, which he accepted. Saturday wasn't so bad as we worked in our office and had some serious discussions about the direction of our business, its growth potential, and the firing of all employees, save one.

Sunday, however, was another story...we headed out mid-morning to the client's office. I'm not a PC tech, but I'm computer-savvy enough to do things with direction. So, hubby gave me task one, which I completed without too much difficulty. Onto task two, which was not hard, but was time consuming. I finished pretty late, 9:30ish PM. All the while, hubby has been doing other stuff, busy, busy, busy the whole time, stopping only when I ran into a stumbling block.

So ten o'clock rolls around and there's nothing more I can do but keep hubby company, which I do. Along comes eleven and there's still another couple of hours of work he needs to do (remember, complete cluster****), so he finds me a sofa and tells me to sleep.

When I finally wake up it's five-thirty AM. He's finally wrapping up and we are on the way home by sixish.

That was hubby's day pretty much all last week, working to two and three in the morning, driving home, catching a few hours of sleep, but back at the client's by eight...

Yeah, I know...fire them all I say.
