Movie Monday -- Star Trek Beyond
Yesterday, DH and I went to see Star Trek Beyond, the third installment of the Star Trek film reboot.
I've been waiting three years for it, and it was filled with just as much awesome as I'd hoped and expected. The theater we were in vibrated and shook in concert with the action on the screen and we had recliner seats. Overall, an awesome movie experience.
Except I remember one of the reasons I hate going to the movies, aside from the expense--the wrapper/eating noise of the people sitting around me. The guy to my right was crunching popcorn in my ear. During the noisy/action-filled scenes, I can deal, but when the scenes are quiet--have a little courtesy and stop eating. I finally had to switch seat with DH, and he thought maybe the guy has special needs. So okay, I get that. He gets to enjoy the film too. That just means I need to not go to movies on opening weekend when the theaters are packed even on Sunday mornings at 10:30!!
So about the film...
Two years into the five-year mission, the Enterprise visits the star base Yorktown for some repairs and much needed R&R. The grind of space has taken it's toll on Kirk and he's ready to put down some roots. After young Spock receives news of elder Spock's death he feels like he should return to New Vulcan and help rebuild his species.
But first--one "last" mission for them both. They think they're going on a rescue mission, but instead they're lured into a trap. Of course. :) Two hours later, they've saved Starbase Yorktown. Kirk has realized there's no where he'd rather be than on his star ship and Spock understands his place is in the Federation.
Lots of action and lots of humor filled the third installment, but there was a level of sadness too. Leonard Nimoy, who played the original Spock and who had guest appearances in the first two reboots died during pre-production.
And tragically, Anton Yelchin, who played the young Chekov of the reboots, was killed in a freak car accident a mere month ago.
May the both rest is peace.
If you're a Star Trek reboot fan, I definitely recommend you see this and see it in a theater. I def give it 10 stars!
Have you seen it? What did you think??

I've gotten terrible about posting on time...
...or planning ahead. It's like the good old days when I just sat down each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning and some random topic would come to mind and I'd spew my thoughts onto the blog.
These days, there's a lot more going on in the brain, mostly right now, there are stories. The epic BBC Sherlock Highlander AU is still a work in progress, but it's slow going because my brain is working out some stuff. The goal is 250 each day even if it's crap that will be deleted later. Sometimes that's part of the process. Get the extraneous stuff out of the brain and onto the page so the brain has more space for the better stuff.
But I also spent a couple of days refilling the well and catching up on the dozen or so episodes I'd missed of the three shows I watch. I gave up TV in favor of writing part one of the above-mentioned epic. Whew--there was some good stuff going on there. I'm really loving Code Black.
And Agent Carter come back in January. I loved last year's mini-season and didn't realize they'd be returning with another. So looking forward to that.
I saw a trailer for the next Star Trek reboot movie--LOVE! Despite my celebrity crush, Benedict Cumberbatch, being in the second one (Into Darkness) I really liked the first one better. Definitely looking forward to seeing how the third one plays out.
(Any excuse to get a picture of Benedict Cumberbatch on the blog, right?)

All right, so happy hump day. See y'all on Friday. I'll try to come prepared. :)

Movie Monday
No, this isn't about a movie I've never seen before though I've watched plenty of late, but a Facebook friend asked people to name some movies they;ve watched more than five times and that have never lost their charm. It seemed like a good blog topic, so here we are.
In the order of most watched to least watched:
1) Star Trek (the 2009 reboot) - I saw it three times in the theater and then well over a hundred fifty times once I got the DVD. Why? I have no idea. Part of the watching was grief. My dad had died about the same time the DVD came out and so watching was one of my coping mechanisms. Every day for almost four months. Not that I necessarily watched the whole thing. I'd watch, then pause when I was ready to stop, then hit play the next day or the next when I was ready to watch again. When the movie was over, I'd start it again. And even after all that, I still love it.
2) Top Gun - I watched this over and over back when my oldest was itty bitty. Not sure what struck me about this movie, but I've seen it well over one hundred times as well.
3) Dirty Dancing - Back in the day, after Top Gun, this movie was a close second for re-watching. Re-watch count has probably not crested one hundred, but well over fifty for sure.
4) Star Trek Into Darkness, the second of the reboots - I don't love it quite as much as the other, nor have I watched it quite as much as the films that come before it, but it's Star Trek and my celebrity crush Benedict Cumberbatch is a huge draw for me.
5) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, book/film no. six of the franchise - Mostly because of the Harry/Ginny romance, so sue me. Ya'll know by know I'm a romance junkie. :)
What about you? What films never get old for you?

Christmas and other stuff
Other stuff first...
On the 6th, I said I was getting back on the wagon. I'm happy to report that I walked to the post office and back every day last week and Monday and yesterday. It takes 10 minutes round trip, and it's amazing how even just that short amount of time moving my body, getting my blood pumping, and being out in the fresh air and (usually) sunshine makes.
I also ate a healthy salad for lunch every day. I didn't do so well with dinners, but I'm counting calories and I mostly stayed under my allotted number of calories. I haven't weighed in yet, but I'm guessing that after yesterday's eleven-hour marathon at Cowboy Stadium (lots of calorie burning, little calorie intake) I've probably lost the weight I gained. Time to take to to the next level, I suppose, which means getting back to calisthenics each day in addition to the walk.
I know you probably wouldn't think so to look at me or read my blog, but I'm a Trekkie. Not a die hard, wear-costumes-to-movie-premiers, or convention-attending hard core kind of Trekkie, but a Trekkie none the less. I s'pose I must confess that I haven't seen The Original Series in it's entirety, nor seen any of the original movies. Does that tarnish my status?
But I have watched all of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise, plus watched the 2009 re-boot movie well over a hundred times. (Can I polish my badge back up,now?)
I love, love, love the franchise makeover. Even though I didn't see all of TOS, I've seen enough to know how amazing the casting for the reboot was. I saw the film in the theater as a fluke but went back twice. I read fanfic for it, too. I've even tried writing a bit, but my sci fi skills aren't so great.
And finally, finally, finally the reboot sequel has a title and a date! I'm so excited.
When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. Written by Paramount Pictures (Blurb pilfered from IMDB)
Sounds awesome, don't you think?
Are you Trek fan? Do you like the reboot??

Star Trek - The New Movie
I saw the new Star Trek film last Friday. Twice, in fact.
I really enjoyed it. I haven't seen enough of the original series to catch all the related jokes, but I really enjoyed learning each character's background. I thought the casting of young versions of each of the main characters was very well done, and although I never liked the older, womanizing version of Kirk, I really liked his younger bad boy self.
Leonard Nimoy played a central role in the plot, which I thought was a tremendous idea.
There was a little romantic twist I didn't expect, but thoroughly bought into--but I won't give it away. So much so, I drug my kids out to see the movie so I could watch it again. Probably not the best idea at 10 pm as I slept through most of it--but I caught the good parts.
The beginning is a bit slow as they give a bit too much prologue, but once it gets going, it's well worth it. I think any Trekkie will enjoy it.
