...won the Barclay's Premiere League Championship title.
For the first time in the leagues 132 year history and at (yes, really) 5000 to 1 odds, the Leicester City Foxes claimed the championship title. (Pronounced "Lester" City, because who knows?)
I can't say I've picked up on all the ins and outs of either game play of league rules, but basically there are 20 teams in the Premiere League. Each year, the three lowest ranking teams cycle down into another of two leagues, which mean two teams from one of those leagues and one from the other moves up into the Premier League.
And so it was that Leicester City was promoted into the Premiere League for the 2013-2014 football season after ten years away and in two years made it all the way to the top of the tables as they say in the U.K.
I spent a nail-biting couple of hours watching the footy yesterday afternoon as Chelsea and Tottenham battled it out. Emotions ran high during the last 10-15 minutes of game play as you can imagine. I think Chelsea was only playing for points/rankings in the league, but Tottenham was also playing for the title, so depending on how either team fared (win, lose or draw) Leicester City's fate would be determined.
Anyway, Chelsea was losing 2-0 going into the second half. For Leicester City to claim the title, Chelsea needed to win or draw. And they pulled off a draw. Now if Tottenham had won, the outcome of Leicester City's remaining two matches (the one against Tottenham) would have been the determining factor.
Congrats to the Leicester City Football Club!!!
