Home Again, Home Again

I made my annual trek to Omaha and back over Labor Day weekend...

The fam is still the fam. Quirky and chaotic and so welcoming of their Texas outlier.

The all day gathering marathons are no longer a thing, and I think my step-mother, my uncle, and I are all glad for the change.

It used to be I stayed at the house and the galloping hordes descended by 10 or 11 am, and there was a houseful until I could convince the visitors to leave by 9 pm--which was well past my bedtime. Sometimes I'd just have to go to bed.

Last year, I ended up getting a hotel and that was the best decision I've made regarding this trip I've made in a while. I can leave when I'm ready and the fam can stay and visit.

This year though...no one arrived on Saturday until 2ish... So Sunday I thought to enjoy a more leisurely morning, but got summonsed around 11:30 when the gray sheep of the family and her posse came to see me earlier than I expected. I still got to enjoy the view from my hotel room for a good forty-five minutes. And although it's hard to tell, a light rain was falling. A very peaceful start to the day.

But now that I'm home -- that road trip closes out the middle part of my year -- it's time to look down the road to the end of the year for all the businesses I wrangle as well as planning for Christmas and into 2027 for my personal businesses.

This year I'm going create a more formalized business plan for both the publishing and the Etsy store. I won't be able to retire (yet?) on my royalty income, but I've been considering ways to expand my readership/customer reach and increase those royalties. Every little bit helps me reach my goal of financial freedom before we reach retirement.

There are lots of moving parts for both businesses so figuring out how to keep track of them is also part of the overall plan of attack.

I hope you enjoyed your long weekend and that this weekend also lives up to its potential.

Stay cool and stay hydrated...but cooler temps are on the horizon for North Texas, thank goodness.

Take care!

Family!

Sweet baby angel Caleb, the newest member of the family.

I traveled to Omaha this Labor Day -- as I have done every Labor Day for the last decade or so -- and met that sweet little boy pictured above. He's just turned three months old and is a sweet natured baby.

I also saw my oldest daughter who drove from Colorado, so that was a nice treat as well.

But let me tell you, my family is a hot mess. Mostly lovable, but such a hot mess.

I also went to visit my dad's grave and left my traditional offering of pinwheels. There was a lovely breeze, and I did get video, but as I'm technologically challenged sometimes, I messed things up and now can't get the video to play. (Bah!) But here's a picture:

And I've finally, finally gotten to work on the revamp of Series One, Book One!

Yeah, remember that?

I've struggled to make progress over the last four months because there were more changes/fixes than I expected there to be. But I kept reading / reviewing and making notes. Finally figured out some of the things that were holding me back and now I'm able to move forward. Whew!

Oh, guess what? I'm no longer an official member of my writers group board of directors! Someone else ran for Treasurer. I still manage the website, but I'm gonna work on documentation so that someone else can take on that job at some point. Maybe even next year. :0)

I've also made some progress on those clay pots I mentioned wanting to paint. Here's the first one:

And, yes, I obviously went with a Pride theme. :0) The other one is going to have gnomes, but I'm still searching for a simple pattern that I like and can pull off with my rudimentary painting skills.

Once I plant something in this pot, I'll share the completely finished project. And once I finish the other, I will of course share that as well.

Take care and see you in two weeks.

Labor Day Road Trip

Before I actually talk about the road trip, I'd just like to extend my condolences to the British Royal Family on the death of their beloved matriarch, Queen Elizabeth II. May she rest in peace.

God save the King...

Now the road trip...

Taken near Guthrie, OK, headed north.

As I usually do, I traveled north to Omaha to visit family over the long weekend. The trip probably wouldn't have happened had Mom not died, but she did and I was able to go. Not that I'm glad it happened at the expense of her life... But I am still grateful that I got to go.

DH had hoped to go with me this year, but inevitably something work-related and something he can't do remotely or push off comes up. Honestly, I don't mind.

I enjoy the long drive by myself. My soul is fed by the time alone and the beauty of the countryside I drive through on my way there and back. The open plains filled with cattle or with fields of lovely growing things are so beautiful to me. The last stretch from the Nebraska border into Bellevue is especially wonderful because Highway 75 is two lanes and the fields and homes are right there.

My family is a chaotic, weird, wild, redneck-ish mass of people. I love them all. I like some of them way more than others...

The last two years, I met new babies, Christine in 2020 and Mayson in 2021...here we are this year. Christine took way too long to warm up to Auntie Jen (hence the face), but Mayson settled right into my arms as if no time had passed.

This year, I met my de facto new sister-in-law, Ally, and new niece, Ana. By all accounts, Ally and my oldest younger brother are destined for marriage. My oldest younger sister and Ally are already besties. Ana and Christine are close in age, so a new cousin and built-in playmate.

Here is Ana and me...

Overall, it was a good trip and good to see and mark the growth of all my nieces and nephews and to meet and welcome Ally and Ana to the family.

Much as I love the drive, one of these days, ten hours in a car just won't be feasible. But not this year and hopefully not next.

Hope you had a lovely and relaxing weekend.

Talk to you soon.

P.S. Two things...

A. I'm going to work on getting back to two posts a week. I'm finding more things to share than what Monday only posting allows for... There may be some misses here and there, but that's the goal. There will definitely be two this week.

B. I'm working on a way to automate getting this blog to those who receive via email. Right now it's been a very tedious process. But it may mean that you might see a post twice. Not sure which one as that depends on when I work out the kinks and launch. I apologize in advance.

Home to see the fam...

As I usually do over Labor Day weekend, I went home to see my family.

We had another new baby, my great nephew Mayson, who is now 4 1/2, 5 months old. And sweet as sweet could be.

Last year, the new baby was Mayson's big sister Christine. She's grown into a funny independent toddler. Thankfully, she hasn't quite hit the terrible twos. But she's busy.

Here she is from last year... :0)

It can be a little chaotic with all the people in a small house, but it's good to be with them for a few days.

Hope your long weekend was relaxing and peaceful. Take care and see you next week.

Time for Family

I made my annual trek to Omaha this past weekend to see my family-- I was driving there on Friday and driving home on Monday, hence no blog posts. I could have scheduled something random, but I just didn't get around to it.

Anyway, my oldest sister and her daughters have all moved back home and so all the baby birds are back in the fold. I got to see those four nieces for the first time in TEN years and they are much grown. All of them teenagers now. Holy smokes. But beautiful and each one unique.

The visit was a little crazier with the addition of the four girls on top of my other sister's three younger, wilder bunch, but a good time was had by all.

My baby sisters and me...

Kristen in the middle and Meagan on the right.

I also stopped in to say hello to our dad, who died ten years ago come November. Of course, I couldn't find his grave because I don't get to go very often and it's usually dark outside. My step-mother ended up throwing on some clothes and driving to the cemetery to help me find it. (Yes, she was up--an early riser like me and the cemetery is ten minutes or less from the house.)

This time, I oriented myself--there's a pergola thing at the end of the walkway--so next year I shouldn't have any issues. :0)

On the drive home, I stopped at some of the scenic overlooks which I have never done, but it's a long drive by yourself, so stopping and stretching isn't a bad thing.

Cows in Kansas!

I've always wanted to stop and see these things, so I finally did. I know they're huge and this picture doesn't do them justice at all. To see them whirling out across the countryside is pretty amazing.

Hope your long weekend was everything you needed it to be-- Catch you Friday.

WHY?

Why are we here in Texas (among other places) experiencing a drought and the upper mid-west anywhere along the Missouri River has been flooded??

Farms, homes, business, wildlife destroyed...

Most of my family, who lives in an Omaha suburb, is fine. Although, my step-mother says that if the water wasn't being "controlled" (HA HA HA HA HA) they'd be wet too. They live only three miles due west of the river. (See the red X.) Luckily the area is somewhat hilly, so they are above normal river levels.

If we can build the Alaska Pipeline, surely we could have put some sort of system in place to pipe all this water to places the need it, like Arizona or Texas?? I mean we had to have known this was coming, right?

Are we just that stupid or complacent or lazy? We must be.

I am feeling decidedly helpless.

What can I do? What difference can I make? It all seems so very hopeless.
