What I Wanna Be When I Grow Up...

The jury's still out on what I want to be when I grow up. :0)

But as I was going through boxes in preparation for the new home office desk...I came across a couple of school papers from my two youngest kids.

They were both surprisingly...accurate. DD and I both got a laugh.

DD was probably in third grade when this happened.

And Sonshine was probably in Kindergarten when he made this.

DD isn't an official teacher, she only has half the required degree; but she has enough of one to teach the 2s and 3s at a faith-based school as well as provide after-school care. But for the point of this post--close enough.

Now, short order cook at a local sports bar isn't anywhere close to "chef on tv" but he cooks food for money, so we're in the vicinity. He used to watch cooking shows when he stayed home sick from school. I'd encouraged him to pursue chef-ery post-high school, but he declined... And now... Well...

**shrugs**

I too wanted to be a teacher and even started my education toward that end, but then I became a mom and my life took a detour. At this point, I'm mostly happy doing what I'm doing (office manager / bookkeeper; hobby enthusiast), so I think I'll stick with it for a little longer.

Have a great week!!

Happy Birthday Sonshine

Twenty-one years ago tomorrow in the wee small hours, the most beautiful baby boy ever was born. Tomorrow, the boy will be a complete adult, legal for military service, gambling, car rentals, and, last but not least, alcohol. Where the heck did those twenty-one years go???

One of the best things I ever did...the other two are in the next picture up...

Time Heals All Wounds

There was a time, not so long ago, that I would have given quite a lot to go back in time. To a time when my kids, Sonshine especially, were still home.

But I've discovered that, as a friend said to me, just because we become adults doesn't mean we stop growing up. Now, I'm not sure what I'm doing could be considered "growing up." I might call it evolving.

Now that I'm not longer having to actively be a mom--not that I was always doing a good job--and which I had been doing since I was nineteen, I can now discover who I am aside from wife and mother. I've been a slow work in progress, but now that other important tasks have been completed, the progress can proceed at a little bit faster pace.

Y'all already know I'm a fan girl, that's been a thing for a while, but now I can explore that a little more like traveling for a fan-run fandom con.

I'm learning that I like to watch sports--some sports anyway. English football of all things. The funny thing is, DH played soccer as a child and until recently, I had no use whatsoever for soccer. I grew up watching baseball and figured that'd be my sport of choice. But hockey is Sonshine's sport of choice and Stanley Cup playoffs, so I've been watching a bit of that, and then for research for a book, I watched a football match and...I liked it. So I watched another and another and well...now I'm a fan. And I have this super duper app that lets me watch them on my terms.

So as the blog is called...there certainly is a time for everything!

Happy Friday!

When does one's status change?

As mentioned on Wednesday, Sonshine is home for a visit. It'll be his last for quite some time as he'll finally be out in the fleet doing the things he's trained to do.

But even though he's a legal adult and has been gone and in the Navy, a rite of passage, as it were, to full "adult-hood" if ever there was one, our relationship still feels mostly the same.

He's home and I'm admonishing him to pick up the bathroom, to clean up the mess he made in the living room, and to behave when he goes out.

Will that be different in nine months or year? When does he stop being the teenager he was/is and become the man whom I no longer feel the need to mother?

The countdown begins...

So we got a definite date for Sonshine to ship out. October 8.

Until now, it's been a nebulous end-of-October time frame, subject to change depending on openings in the training programs.

Having an official date (though still subject to change, I'm sure) makes it all the more real.

You all know how proud I am of him and how excited I was for him to join the military, but having a date brings it all home. My son is going out into the world to make his own way. For good.

It's a good thing. I know it is.

But it makes me sad...

Watch out Fort Worth...

Once the Stock Show and Rodeo has left town, there'll be a new driver on the road.

After Friday's post I had to take Sonshine to the local DPS office to take his written exam for his drivers license. Only we couldn't find his Social Security card, which meant a trip to the Social Security Admin office to get some form verifying his number. Then back to the DPS. Only to be told there was a two hour wait just to take the written exam.

But, believe it or not, we had a little luck. A while back I'd noticed them building a Drivers License Center near to our house. As luck would have it, it opened Thursday afternoon. We left one DPS and rushed over to this new facility and were in and out in less than two hours!

So my baby is now permitted to drive a car as long as he has a licensed adult driver over the age of 21 in the car with him. He didn't feel comfortable hopping in the truck and driving home though, despite it being back roads the whole way.

And no longer do you carry a paper permit for six months. He'll have an honest-to-goodness plastic card in the mail in a couple of weeks.

Moments of childhood....

Sonshine was on a mission the other day: to fashion a sling shot. He'd found a Y-shaped branch and he was off to the races. First he had to make holes in the arms of the Y in order to attach the elastic. That slowed him down since we didn't have any drill bits at home, so Wednesday he asked if I would find some at the office and take them home. Which I did.

Only to discover we didn't have the right type of something in the drill he was using to hold the drill bit securely. I'm not sure how he solved that problem, but at some point, he discovered another. His branch was mostly dead/dry rotted and it crumbled.

So he had to find a new one. Up the oak tree he went. After he'd found one that met his approval, he needed to fire-bake it. Or so he said. To make it stronger I think was his purpose. So he gathered up some large rocks, made a fire pit, and started a fire.

(Yes, we like fire at our house. So?)
(My only concern was him getting soot all over his band t-shirt, so I made him strip.)

Anyway, he finally finished his sling-shot:

I grinned and chuckled through the whole series of events because I love to see him in "little boy" mode. Not really little little boy mode per se, but not just sitting on his butt playing xBox. It was fun to watch him and be involved in the process, too.

My baby is growing up, but occasionally he returns to childhood, and I love it.

I really miss my kids being little. Life was easier and mush less complicated.

Obviously, we can't go back, but if you could, how far back would you like to go?

Keep Sonshine and me in your thoughts this weekend...

Sonshine leaves on his band trip tomorrow morning at 4am-ish. The students going on the trip are required to be at school by midnight tonight and they will be locked in the band hall until the bus arrives.

This is the first time Sonshine will be away from home without a family member for an extended period of time. I'm a bit nervous as he's fifteen...

Hubby gave him the 'talking to' this morning and his band instructor is no pushover by any stretch of the imagination. And generally he respects authority, so I probably have nothing to worry about, but there's still that niggle: I don't want it to be *my* kid who leaves a lasting impression of the negative kind on the whole event.

And according to the band director, band is one of the few school groups that has never had an incident while on trips and consequently still gets to go on them.

They will playing one official event tomorrow afternoon and the rest of the weekend will be fun, fun, fun...

...for them. I'll be a bit nervous until Sunday when I know the bus is on its way home and my kid is safely ensconced thereon with no further opportunities for trouble-making.

The downhill slide

My youngest starts high school today. In fact, he'll be on his way to school shortly. His older sister will drop him off and pick him up.

And so begins a new phase in my life as a mother. The baby is almost grown up.

The oldest child has moved out. I'm not sure what her life is like, but as far as I know she's still working, thank goodness, and she has someplace to live. I see her every now and again when she swings by to pick up mail or another box of her stuff, but she doesn't reveal much. But she seems to be doing okay.

The middle child is still at home. Not attending college this semester, but she will be searching for a job soon. She babysat twice a week this summer--just enough to keep her in pocket change. Not that she has any expenses at this point. But it's time to take that next step--a decent paying job and a car of her own. I expect that sometime between now and the time her brother graduates, this daughter, too, will be out on her own. Well, I certainly hope so. :)

The next four years will alternately drag and fly by. I'm not sure how I feel about that, all of a sudden. I have been looking forward to the time when all the kids were gone and my house and my time were my own. But thinking of my son all grown up and away from me...hmm...not so excited at the moment.

Is that a mother/son thing? I never felt that way about my girls. Or is it less the gender and more that it's the baby? Hard to know. Although I imagine in four years I'll be ready for what comes next.

Birthdays!

My baby turns fourteen in a matter of days. The passage of time for this particular child has always been a good thing. I was lucky enough to not have to work and I was able to spend a lot of time with this one as he grew from baby to toddler to elementary school kid. Each stage a joy and wonder to behold. He's a good boy, mostly. Our biggest issue is getting him to do his school/homework in certain subjects.

Now he's on the verge of high school and manhood. I'm not looking forward to the high school part so much, and the thought of having all three children out of the house by the time he graduates has so far overridden the possible sadness of the empty nest. I am mostly an unsentimental mother, definitely ready for oldest two birds to leave the nest. Unfortunately, it is most difficult for anyone to make it on their own, much less a young woman attending college and working part time.

Well, here's to birthdays and sons!

Happy Birthday, Son--
