National Sunflower Day is Coming!

 

National Sunflower Day is the first Saturday of August.

So it turns out that I've loved sunflowers for longer than I realized. The "bouquet" above, in that vase, has been a fixture in my bedroom since we lived in Nebraska. We moved to Texas in 1999... That's a long time.

I'm sure I don't have to explain why anyone is drawn to them...part of it is the name. Sun. I love the sun, and sunlight and vitamin D is vital to everyone's health and well being. Now I get that some of us love it more than others.

I read the "National Sunflower Day" write up, and I would encourage you to go read it for yourself, but here are a few amazing take aways:

  • On average, one sunflower can produce up to 2,000 sunflower seeds per head.
  • Some archaeologists believe sunflowers may have been cultivated by Native Americans before corn was.
  • A sunflower head can be bigger than your own.

DD and I are thinking of planting sunflowers around the birdbath to help provide some natural shade for the birds as well to brighten up the yard. I'll have to research the best time to plant them, but my guess is spring...

Merry Monday...


I'm a bit late on the uptake again, but I was barely on the PC at all this weekend, so the blog was not on my mind at all.

We hired some lawn care folks to come take care of our jungle...as I mentioned, DH was gone and the lawnmower broke. With all the moisture, it grew out of control rather quickly, though I don't think the guys really realized what they were in for. It took them almost 3.5 hours to do front, sides, and back--most of that was spent on the back yard.


But it's done now and it looks 100% better. I spent some time Sunday morning trimming away growth from along the fences and other random areas, as well as clearing out my bird feeder bed which has been terribly neglected of late and was looking rather pathetic.

Aside from that, I watched a lot of TV with hubster, but spent some time enjoying the sunshine with the dog.

Here Comes the Sun


No, it's not Music Monday, but we've had a pretty soggy time of it here in Texas so the title seemed fitting.

We're nearing June and we've had so much rain. We've needed it, there's no doubt, though maybe not so much all at once. I have to imagine that just about all our 254 counties should be out of drought conditions by this point. According to one station, our local PBS station, this is the wettest month ever in recorded history. I can well believe it.


My yards are saturated, and puddles sit for hours. The lawn leaks down the driveway for hours as well.


I can't say I'm displeased with the fact that I've had the lowest electricity bills for the last two months since we haven't had to run the AC much, but I'm ready for some sunshine and, yes, some heat.

Monday, Monday...

It's s beautiful crisp, sunshiney morning here in North Texas.

The Christmas tree is down, boxed up, and put back into the shed. Christmas is gone from the house save a couple of items that didn't make it back into the few containers I'd hauled in.

The muse hit me yesterday and knocked me over, so in between loads of laundry and various other minor household chores, I wrote and wrote. And, boy, did it feel good to have the words flow. I'm at 3100 words for yesterday and still counting! If I didn't need my sleep, I'd've stayed up later.

Well, gotta get some work done so I can get back to writing.
